Someone Has To Do It: US Elections 2020

Democratic Candidates who have formally declared their candidacy as of this writing:

Julian Castro (HUD Secretary under Obama, former Mayor of San Antonio)

    John Delaney (Congressman from Maryland)

Tulsi Gabbard ("Controversial" Congresswoman from Hawaii)

Richard Ojeda (retired Army Major, member of the West Virginia Senate)

I would be surprised if anyone on here but the real US politics junkies have heard of Ojeda or Delaney; even Castro is arguably not as well known as his brother.

The potential candidates with the highest name recognition (Biden, Booker, Gillibrand, Harris, Warren, etc.) have yet to declare formally, though all have begun preparations to one degree or another.

140 no-hopers have filed with the Federal Elections Commission so far/

I was pleased to see Sherrod Brown get a recommendation of sorts from Michael Tomasky in the latest NYRB.

I have shown a video of Castro in class a few times - he's a talking head in the PBS 'Los Graduados' series. I like him.

Castro: "Today, we live in a world in which brainpower is the new currency of success" UGH

Castro’s campaign promises to fall within the current Democratic mainstream. He said he wants to make the first two years of college, a certification program or apprenticeship “accessible and affordable,” though he stopped short of calling for free college, as some Democrats have done

Ursus forgot one very major player in 2020.

            Amber Frost: It's Bernie, Bitch
Ignore the bad-faith liberals: Bernie Sanders still has the best chance of giving “pragmatists” what they say they want—a presidential win.

Bernie Sanders was born in fucking 1941.

Why doesn't this guy throw his hat in the ring.

I think Chapo had it spot on in their last episode about Gen X being a near-total write-off politically. They don't remember a vibrant trade union movement, the post-war liberal settlement, or any sort of left politics (even anti-war activism), but they're too old to roll their eyes at "Medicare for All is Soviet Communism!". For them, a vibrant left is the 1992 Presidential election. So we get this complete tripe and a doughnut hole of decent presidential candidates between really old guys/gals and "When will AOC turn 35?"

The current POTUS is less than five years older and subsists on a diet of McDonald's and ketchup-lathered steak. Next.

(I'd also point out that Joe Biden was born in 1942.)

I think all of these people are far too old. Joe Biden was too old in 2008.

Bernie is not a boomer, so he has that going for him.

Bernie is also younger than the President of Ireland.

Although the latter gig is a bit easier.

Tulsi Gabbard is 37 and Julian Castro is 44, Berba

I should have included Bernie and maybe Brown and/or Beto and/or Klobuchar, but the parenthetical wasn't intended to be exhaustive.

All Michael D does is go around, and hang out with old people, unveil things and spout flowery shite. He could do that when he's 100 years dead. .

In approximate order of seriousness and plausibility, I think this is a near complete list of people who've said they're exploring, who've said they won't rule out, who've actually committed, or who're part of somebody's wishful thinking.

And if I was breaking them down into categories...

                                    Really serious candidates:

                                    Kamala Harris
                                    Elizabeth Warren

Too old to be quite top tier:

                                    Joe Biden
                                    Bernie Sanders

Half serious candidates who might take off:

                                    Amy Klobuchar
                                    Cory Booker
                                    John Hickenlooper
                                    Kirsten Gillibrand

Quarter-serious candidates who have a distant chance if literally everything goes right for them:

                                    Sherrod Brown
                                    Julian Castro
                                    Steve Bullock

                                    Too new on the scene:

                                    Beto O'Rourke
                                    Stacey Abrams

                                    Never gonna happen:

                                    Oprah Winfrey
                                    Michelle Obama
                                    Hillary Clinton

Only one person thinks these guys should be running, and that's themselves:

                                    Eric Garcetti
                                    Bill DeBlasio
                                    Andrew Cuomo
                                    Eric Holder
                                    John Kerry

                                    Basically unknown nonentities:

                                    Pete Buttigieg
                                    Mitch Landrieu
                                    Richard Ojeda
                                    Terry McAuliffe
                                    Tulsi Gabbarrd
                                    John Delaney

Ha! Democrats are not choosing an annoying billionaire as an alternative to Trump:

                                    Michael Bloomberg
                                    Tom Steyer

I think Kasich and Flake will probably have a go, and if Trump gets weaker there's an outside chance that Sasse will, too. I think the odds of any of them beating him are very, very small unless something goes really tits up in the economy and with the Russia investigation at the same time.

He's the mayor of LA. He probably won't end up actually being a candidate, because the only person who thinks he's brilliant and popular enough to become President is himself.

Obama was nowhere near top tier this time in 2007 so I wouldn't stake everything on those tiers holding up.
