When covid forces you to spend more than the odd weekend at your second home in the Hamptons, it turns out that you discover that you might need to get some work done to it. Fortunately thanks to covid all the tradesmen are underemployed so it's easy to get them to come and do some work.

It was bad enough that this article called Jeanine Anez's government in Bolivia a "caretaker government," then they dropped this:
Adding to these challenges, democracy in Latin America has also lost a champion in the United States, which had played an important role in promoting democracy after the end of the Cold War by financing good governance programs and calling out authoritarian abuses.

A friend of mine was interviewed for a gig teaching at a pod in San Diego for some banking types. It sounded too good to be true - 3 times what he gets paid as a sub teacher, 5 kids only, assistant of his choosing. It turned out that during the interview there were lots of questions about whether he would "enforce" CDC rules like masking. They were very unenthusiastic about maintaining social distancing and masks in the "pod".Last edited by San Bernardhinault; 17-08-2020, 13:30.

Not the NYT, but I find the pronunciation guide for "apropos" very irritating. Presumably "pow" would be one of the other words the author can't pronounce.

There's a growing scrutiny on Rukmini Callimachi's reporting. Callimachi is one of the star reporters at the Times who has made a name for herself by covering ISIS, doing extremely long Twitter threads, and from hosting a podcast series, Caliphate. It turns out that the main source for that podcast might have been making up everything, something she strongly denied when questions were raised earlier.

Ms. Burns, 22, said her choices have narrowed considerably over the last nine months. With opportunities in oil and gas limited, she recently accepted an internship with an engineering consulting firm specializing in energy conservation
It's tragic that people have to look into such catastrophic dead-end useless fields after having their hopes dashed for what would have been a bright future in environmental destruction.Last edited by San Bernardhinault; 05-01-2021, 13:33.
