    Popular common 'taters

Maris Pipers are the daddy, aren't they?

When I was a nipper I would only eat Yeoman instant potato, insisting that 'actual' potatoes were disgusting as they had mud on them. For some reason, possibly to do with a juvenile fear of alien robots, Smash was out too.

Maris pipers every time for chips and roasties. They're not so good for baking or boiling but boiled and baked potatoes are very much in the second tier of potato product, way behind chips, roasties and mash.

Named after Maris Lane, Trumpington, (suburb of Cambridge) fact fans. (That's where the Plant Breeding Institute - where I worked briefly - was. There seems to be a Waitrose there now.)

I'm really not that bothered. It's a potato.

I think Edwards make better roasties than Pipers: kind of a deeper potato-eyness in the flavour. Pipers for chips, though; has to be. Blanched in medium-hot oil then finished in almost-smoking oil. Flemish-style, man.

And it's well worth being bothered. Chips made with waxy spuds are swag.
