Anywhere, I just popped in to flag up that numerous of the wonderful live osprey nest cams I first discovered a year or so ago during the initial lockdown are now streaming footage of their occupants newly returned from Africa and setting up home again for the British summer:

    Dyfi Osprey Project

    Wales
    Dyfi Estuary (near Aberystwyth): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rSaYPVL3xM
Established female Telyn and her new mate Idris from last year are getting happily re-established. First egg laid yesterday, second could be as soon as early tomorrow.
    Llyn Clywedog (near Llanidloes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCS7YjC3KQs
First egg looks imminent judging by female (Seren) bird's behaviour.
    Glaslyn (near Porthmadog): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlD4Cc0DYa0
Wales' osprey matriarch Mrs G has just laid her second egg this afternoon, first was on Saturday. She's successfully raised 41 chicks since 2004, and is accelerating: if she has another three fledge this year she and her current partner Aran will have managed 18 since 2015 alone.

    Scotland
Loch Arkaig (west of Great Glen): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hnj51gVwL7c
Male Louis has only just arrived back two days ago, still very thin so far. Female Aila not reappeared yet, hopefully any time now.
Loch of the Lowes (near Dunkeld): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4TNpY1NhWw
A new one on me, I evidently missed this last year. Right by the loch shore, first egg laid Sunday.

    England
    Rutland Water (Manton Bay): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpN2akxWtF0
Very early arrivals back from Africa, Maya and Blue 33 have been incubating eggs for respectively 14, 11 and 8 days already.
    Poole Harbour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCGzx9BIih0

Some of the above maintain the same stream throughout, others switch to a new one periodically (and Clywedog does so daily), but if the links here aren't showing the current livestream clicking through to the relevant channel's main page should offer up the newest one.

Great work VA. It's amazing, when I left in 1998 ospreys were really scarce, and only in Scotland.

Saw a woodpecker earlier. And loads of delicate little flitty birds in various shades of yellow and green, dogfighting around the bird table, trying to claim aerial supremacy in the Battle of the Seeds. No idea what they are, except that they're now my mates.

Yeah it was a nod to the Bill Oddie routine we've done on here before.

              Siskins EIM?

Aye it’s a Jay that one. Belting photo.

I think from your description EIM that you’ve got a flock of Siskins.

                  That's them. Good guys.

It landed in a tree near to the bench I was sitting on having my lunch and unusually sat still long enough for me to get a good shot of it.

This morning I saw a bird in the neighbour's tree that I'm not sure I've see before. Kind of two reddish patches on the breast either side of the centre. Googling makes me think it was probably a linnet, but I'm not entirely convinced (though I can't find anything else that even looks close) I was able to get quite close to it before it flew off.

                        Sounds like a Redpoll:

Saw a green woodpecker on a walk yesterday evening. It was hopping along with us about 10 metres behind it for perhaps two minutes or so, so we had a nice view of it, though we didn't get a good photo. There are loads of great spotted woodpeckers here - in every other tree at this time of year, it sometimes seems - but the greens are much less common. We also have the black woodpecker, which I've only seen once. Like the green, the top of its head is a very bright red.

I've been investigating and I think it must have been a linnet. The lesser redpoll (which is the only European one) doesn't seem to get this far whereas the linnet is definitely here. And I didn't see any red patch on the head.

Eagle spotting today. Three white-tailed eagles from two different breeding pairs off the west coast of Mull. Then a golden eagle not far from them when we were back on land. What a buzz.

Fantastic, EIM. Which company did you go out with, if you don't mind me asking?

                                                While we’re on big raptors:

More than 15 rare birds, whose population is at about 160 in the state, showed up at Cinda Mickol’s home – and they’ve made a mess

                                                  EIM - fantastic shots!

Quite a bit milder in our backyard where we had this little black-headed grosbeak bash into our dining room window. My wife feared it would not survive, but held it for a few minutes, stroked it, and it eventually flew away from her hands. Crossed fingers it is hanging in there.

Oh, good for you for looking after it while it was stunned, and fingers crossed indeed that it's recovered OK. Lovely looking bird.
