This is astonishing if also profoundly distressing

“From the moment the British invaded Australia in 1788 they encountered active resistance from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander owners and custodians of the lands. In the frontier wars which continued until the 1960s massacres became a defining strategy to eradicate that resistance. As a result thousands of Aboriginal men women and children were killed. This site presents a map, timelines, and information about massacres in Central and Eastern Australia from 1794 when the first massacre was recorded until 1930. Only events for which sufficient information remains from the past and can be verified are included. The map also includes information about massacres of British colonists and others in Central and Eastern Australia in the same period. After 1930 the massacres continued but are not included here. Details of incidents of massacres after 1930 will be included in the next stage of the project.”

Is this a map? It's impressive either way.

            palestine open maps

Palestine Open Maps is a platform that seeks to combine emerging technologies for mapping and immersive storytelling to:
            • Open-source and make searchable, for the first time, a uniquely detailed set of historic maps from the period of the British Mandate of Palestine;
            • Curate layered visual stories that bring to life absent and hidden geographies, in collaboration with data journalists, academic researchers, and civil society groups.

This alpha version of the platform allows users to navigate and search the historic map sheets, and to view basic data about present and erased localities.

Just to clarify with the above, a "plus" means more immigrants are employed than locals.

A useful map, detailing the European nationals resident in each member state - one often fails to realise the number of British resident here, largely because many are either returning to this country after working in the UK, or of Irish parents.

Just to be clear, it means that the percentage of non-nationals in employment is higher than that of nationals. The nominal figures would tell a very different story.

I wonder if they have controlled for the fact that non-nationals skew heavily to being of employment age (especially if their children can acquire "local" citizenship).

There was an Irish study done by the ESRI analysing employment according to nationality, and it found that the unemployment rates for Irish nationals and foreign nationals were virtually identical, at roughly 7% for both, so that would take age and educational levels into consideration.

This is an entirely normal map, which you are all very familiar with....except the orientation. Somehow that switch has a fascinating effect (if you click on it you get to see the whole thing)

I like that it gives the Asturian cities their names in Asturiano.

It seems to give many of the cities in local language (in transliteration where appropriate). Even to the point of giving both names for places like Hebron and Jerusalem. Though, it's not entirely the case (eg "Istambul")

I always like the 'different orientation' experience with maps. Oddly disconcerting but an interesting perspective. Of course early Islamic maps (from our point of view) would have south as north and vice versa. So in this sort of thing, once you spot the 'upside down' Arabian peninsula in the middle, you can then work out what's going on.

Over the centuries things became a little more westernised, certainly by the era of Piri Reis. Which is just an excuse to post one of his lovely maps, this one of the Black sea.

Literally the only part of that where they'd go 'yeah' seems about right' is NRW.

Except for the Balearic Coast, though solely in the minds of Catalans.

I can barely read the text but the Celtic Union, I think it is, seems to have ceded a big chunk of central and eastern Scotland to whatever that north Britain entity is called, which I'm guessing might prompt a stiff letter of complaint from Nicola Sturgeon.
