Good god. Can we even do this now?

Putting this on this thread not because it is particularly unbelievable now, it feels very plausible, but because it dovetails nicely with the posts above about futuristic technologies not quite being up-to-scratch.
In fact, isn't there a dystopian sci-fi novel from the 50s or 60s that opens with a robot supermarket burning down and so leaving everybody starving? Possibly written by Philip K Dick?

Maybe I'm just getting immune to corporate wank terminology and buzzwords, but I didn't find the "fulfilment centre" label particularly WTF. The processes that go on in those depots are a large part of what needs to be done to fulfil customers' orders. I mean, we live in an age of far more nonsensical official language, like, say, HMRC referring to taxpayers as "customers" for the last decade or so.

I'm sure the sacking truly is the bane of Sporting's daily chats.

That, of course, was where my husband lived for many years, although not his monastery, I don't think. This chap lived to 82, but that the monks were allowed to keep that boy as a virtual prisoner in the 1940s is still quite gobsmacking. I hope they've not raised any children since.

I don't think this really belongs on the serious Covid thread - the lead story in much of Aus/NZ today:
In Sydney lockdown protest, horse punched by man not wearing Newcastle United shirt. Thoughts, prayers and carrots for the horse ...
