I remember hearing about that a while back. I think there may have even been a link on here about it.

            The WTF? Thread

Lots of people have been waterboarded and worse for much less.

Andrew Adler, the owner and publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times, a weekly newspaper serving Atlanta's Jewish community, devoted his January 13, 2012 column to the thorny problem of the U.S. and Israel's diverging views on the threat posed by Iran. Basically Israel has three options, he wrote: Strike Hezbollah and Hamas, strike Iran, or "order a hit" on Barack Obama. Either way, problem solved!

And I'm sure he would brand me an anti-Semite if I referred to Israel as a rogue state.

Mr Tilbury is quoted in the Eye as saying he has had "many hours of cognitive behaviour therapy with a psychotherapist trying to work out why a Thames Valley Police firearms instructor would fire Dirty Harry's weapon of choice -- a .44 magnum -- in a seminar room."

Georgia megachurch bishop Eddie Long was wrapped in a Torah that is supposedly 312 years old and supposedly was found in Auschwitz by a supposed rabbi and proclaimed a king by the rabbi.

Bishop Long made news last year when he settled accusations of sexual relationships with four young men out of court last year.

That rabbi needs to do some research.

Details of the settlement were to be kept secret, but people with knowledge of the case have put it at several million dollars paid over a period of years.

Some of the men have since spoken out, so lawyers for the church have tried to get part of the money returned, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

There have been other legal battles. Ten former members who attended church investment seminars are suing him, claiming he coerced them into investment deals that cost them their retirement savings. He recently reached a settlement in a lawsuit over a $2 million bank loan, much of which went unpaid after a real estate deal that went bad.

In 2007, Bishop Long was one of a half-dozen ministers whose tax-exempt status was investigated by a Senate committee.

Support for Bishop Long continues to shrink. Just before the sexual coercion settlement was announced, the Rev. Bernice King, the youngest daughter of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., left the church.

                                  The WTF? Thread

"Helicopter" parents show up for their progeny's job interviews.

Michigan State University surveyed more than 700 employers seeking to hire recent college graduates. Nearly one-third said parents had submitted resumes on their child's behalf, some without even informing the child. One-quarter reported hearing from parents urging the employer to hire their son or daughter for a position. Four percent of respondents reported that a parent actually showed up for the candidate's job interview.

Those types of interventions can backfire, says Feister. "It definitely does not show great leadership or decision-making skills," she says.

Parents are "an influencer," Artim says. "So if they feel more comfortable that it's a solid, stable, growing company with a lot of opportunities, and a good culture and people who care, they're going to feel better about encouraging their son or daughter to consider it."

To that end, Enterprise is happy to send parents the same recruitment packages it sends their children. And when Enterprise interns present their final projects and are considering full-time positions, parents are invited in.

Well, judging from my daughter's last science fair, a lot of parents do things their children should be doing, so it was only a matter of time before this happened.

It almost never comes up in his math(s) competitions, because none of the parents can do the problems.

I think (I hope!) it becomes less common as the children get older. (My daughter was in second grade last year). It pissed me off, though, as she had designed her experiment completely by herself, did all the data collection on her own, made the poster, etc., and when she brought it to school it became pretty obvious that she was competing with more than a few people in their forties.
