Bit of a minor WTF, this one, but I've just received an e-mail from my son's school with this link on it.

I'm not sure what's surprised me most: that the school is bothered enough about this to ask parents to involve themselves in finding a "solution" or that there's a Wiki page for it!

                  The WTF? Thread

Some interesting details in indictments of some US Navy officials in an ongoing corruption investigation:

The Navy personnel are accused of taking bribes in the form of lavish gifts, prostitutes and luxury hotel stays courtesy of Leonard Glenn Francis, a Singapore-based defense contractor who has already pleaded guilty to defrauding the Navy of tens of millions of dollars.

The indictment lists page after page of bribes allegedly provided to the defendants — seven senior officers and one enlisted sailor — including $25,000 watches, $2,000 boxes of Cohiba cigars, $2,000 bottles of cognac and $600-per-night hotel rooms.

According to the charging documents, Francis also frequently sponsored wild sex parties for many officers on the USS Blue Ridge, the flagship of the Navy’s 7th Fleet, and other warships.

During a port visit by the Blue Ridge to Manila in May 2008, for example, five of the Navy officers attended a “raging multi-day party, with a rotating carousel of prostitutes,” at the Shangri-La Hotel, according to the indictment. The group allegedly drank the hotel’s entire supply of Dom Perignon champagne and rang up expenses exceeding $50,000, which Francis covered in full.

On another port visit by the Blue Ridge to Manila in February 2007, Francis allegedly hosted another sex party for officers in the MacArthur Suite of the Manila hotel. During the party, “historical memorabilia related to General Douglas MacArthur were used by the participants in sexual acts,” according to the indictment.

This article (assuming it isn't an early April Fools Day spoof) really lays bare the abject absurdity of the monarchy and the UK's version of it in particular. I'm particularly struck by how "Every station, down to hospital radio, has prepared music lists made up of “Mood 2” (sad) or “Mood 1” (saddest) songs to reach for in times of sudden mourning." Yes, hospital radio is apparently under a patriotic injunction to make sick people feel more miserable when an overprivileged, very old woman dies. What a country.

I read that this morning and my main thought - aside from, 'well now I'm starting my day feeling a bit depressed,' was that I fucking hope she doesn't die shortly before or during my trip back there later this year, because it'll play havoc with my plans to catch up with friends in various bits of the country and try to enjoy myself.

I liked the line, 'In Ireland, the Irish bar is known only as the pub.' Yes, thanks for that. And in China, Chinese food is just called 'food'.

A man has been killed by an exploding ticket machine at a railway station in Germany.

Police said the man had attempted to open the machine at Dortmund-Scharnhorst station when it blew up in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The German reports suggest that he was using an explosive to try to open the machine, and was killed by the door, which was blown off the machine.

This certainly doesn't look like the result of a crowbar job

It also isn't much of a "station", but rather two platforms outside of Dortmund where trains stop every two hours if one is lucky.

More seriously, the reason why this kind of crime is more prevalent in Germany is that Germans are still culturally adverse to credit and debit cards and prefer to use cash for such purposes.
