    Quick US linguistic query

Is 'area man' an Onionism or do you folk use that phrase in real life?

And have I just asked a really dumb question?

I have no idea what you are on about (and haven't read the Onion regularly since leaving the US).

    How is it used?

As a synonym for "local man", used only in newspaper headlines. As in "Area man bites dog".

It's mainly an onionism, but they're riffing off bad local newspaper copy.

        Ah, it suddenly becomes clear.

Gramsci's right (even if he is Canadian); you would only see it in the headline of a bad local newspaper, most likely one that claimed to cover a rather amorphous region rather than a well-defined city.
