I didn't realise things had got that bad for tuna

    NY Times article

I'd heard dinner party murmurings about stocks of it getting low, but United Nations talks banning trade in the stuff altogether? I don't think that's been big news in the UK at all.

I had a "pizza marinara" in a restaurant last weekend, and will be making a tuna pasta bake for tonight (well I might as well, I don't think chucking the tins of it I've got back into Morecambe Bay will help replenish stocks in any way).

If they want to survive, tuna and sharks need to start evolving cuter expressions and learn a few tricks with beach balls.

Surely "Tuna Friendly" Tuna is just an empty can?

If The Cove is to be believed, dolphins aren't exactly flourishing either.

This is only to do with Blue-Fin tuna isn't it? Skipjack and Yellow Fin seem to be ok for now.

Has anyone said "How unfor-tuna-te" yet?

I'll get my coat ...unless I'm harpooned, hooked, netted or poisoned on the way to the cloakroom, of course.

Shortage of tuna = less frequent Fall albums?

"But Japan, which consumes well over half of the worldwide catch and where a single fish can fetch prices above $100,000"

Really? Surely that's got to be a typo?

Certain tuna can weigh up to 400lbs, and the market for certain parts of the fish for sushi is astounding.

*edit although the record for a bluefin tuna c Jan 2008 was $63,000 for a 276kg tuna (600lbs-ish?)

**edit scratch the above: $100k in Jan 2009 for 128kg (282lbs)

This type of tuna finds its way into the highest end sushi only. Think Nobu. There was a BBC show protesting about it I saw last time I was in Ireland.

I suppose I'm going to have to adjust my catfood-buying policies in the light of this. Omar's gonna be pissed off.

"I'm sorry Omar, that's your last Tuna catfood. It'll have to be haddock from now on."

                            "But it's nothing like this!"
