On the old board, someone, gerontophile I think, posted a thread with people they fancy up and it was deleted under the reasoning that it was just pictures of people that they fancy with no other angle.

Is there really a problem with this? Do we have have a spin on this like "Authors we fancy" or "Crush of Shame". Personally, although I wholeheartedly took part, the latter is potentially more offensive than just puttin gup pics of people we fancy because they are attractive.

I have no particular need to put up such a list and I am not sure that myself and gerontophile (if it was, indeed, he) have the same tastes but I do feel that if a thread oversteps the mark, it will be attacked vigourously by the board members and doesn't need to be deleted so that we don't worry our pretty little heads about it.

I am fairly sure if something goes beyond the pale, SSS, for example will be on it like a dog to the bone and, at least, it is up for debate.

I think OTF has developed a small witless sexism problem, to be honest. It's not as bad as SSS has occasionally claimed, but it exists. Whether that requires a ban on insufficiently well targeted "phwoarr" threads I don't know, but I don't think "It's OK because SSS will tell us if we go astray" quite cuts it as a general position.

The crush of shame was intended to be something more akin to the 'people you dislike yourself for liking' thread*. It's about the often somewhat unsettling disjunction between perceived personal, social or political failings and physical attractiveness. the thread was meant to be a chance to examine the disconcerting effect that a sexual attraction can have on a rational assessment of someone's character or opinions, and how this often paradoxical situation can open up a kind of cognitive 'gap' as it were, a locus within which we can formulate some interesting questions about not only our society's various discourses on beauty, truth, and good, and the media's constant distortion of these, but also on our day to day personal interactions with all sorts of people.

Sting, though, that goes beyond shame. A crush on Sting is a war crime.

* I would say that, cos I started it, but still.

I was using SSS as an example rather than himspecifically but what I mean is that I would prefer any threads up and debated rather than deleted before we have a chance to decide for ourselves.

As someone who has had accusations of sexism pointed at him, I woudl rather be attacked by the forum and have the chance to defend myself out in the open.

To be fair, geront (if it was..) did ask and an admin responded honestly and G didn't take it any further so I am not saying that the admins are coming over heavy-handed.

I mean, if it is excessive abuse, racism, sexism or porn links etc then fair do's but where we had "authors we fancy" and "snorg girls" which are just "people we fancy" with a spin on then there seems to be a rather fuzzy line.

Not that I think there was anything wrong with those two threads by the way.

Thinking about it, ironically, I think that gerontophile may have been putting up pics of lovely ladies

Yeah the Crush of Shame thread was merely a cousing of the "I shouldn't, but I do" and "I should, but I don't" threads of a few years back. And in each case, some interesting discussion points opened up.

That said, I agree with Wyatt that there is a creeping, low-level sexism on here at times. That in part, though, is simply a product of the fact that OTF is overwhelmingly dominated by middle-class white men (self included, natch). This also affects - and indeed limits - OTF's general politics. It's not very surprising.

I nearly started a thread about those little ads in the londonpaper that people text in saying stuff like 'you get the 21 bus every day and I fancy you' and so on. That's the kind of level my brain is operating on. I did resolve at new year to never discuss the top 10 subjects that wind me up the most on the internet, but I've broken that several thousand times already so maybe a serious row would be good.
