The world's least funny newspaper cartoon

I struggled with this one as there's heavy competition. George & Lynne. Fred Basset.

However, I plumped for Rick Brookes in The Metro, whose work never failed to lower my spirits during my morning commute.

Assuming we're restricting ourselves to cartoons that are actually supposed to be funny, Mallard Fillmore has to be up there. And BC. And that one with the Foreign Legion.

Does anyone remember Nancy? That was less funny than colon cancer.

Thing is with George & Lynne and Fred Basset (and Andy Capp) - their combination of crapness and wrongness is somehow compelling. When they stopped showing Lynne's tits it got positively surreal - there seemed to be no point to it whatsoever.

That Metro one is bad, but there's one in the Mirror that's worse - I think it might be called Badlands. It features a Red Indian, Tonto and a man in a Star Trek outfit doing nothing funny.

Oh yeah. Not funny at all. But I never failed to read it, possibly in the vain hope that one day, against all odds it would managed to raise a smile, but it never did. Stylistically Nancy was quite fascinating though and has been a massive influence on contemporary artists, particularly Keith Haring. Interestingly Ernie Bushmiller's earlier strip Fritzi Ritz, in which Nancy appears — she's Fritzi's niece — is a much better read but was not close to being as popular.

My vote for all-time worst goes to the abysmal Family Circus which has all of Nancy's faults and non of its post-modern redeeming qualities.

I absolutely loved Family Circus when I was a kid. Collected the anthology books and all. In the early years, it was actually funny snapshots of family life.

Then I went through a twenty year period of hating it for the humourless, sappy 'phoning it in' that it became.

Now I enjoy it again, but I suspect it's nostalgia at work, in that Keane still draws the naive '60s/'70s Ameri-Canadiana that reminds me of my childhood.

Family Circus is like the absolute zero of humor, although I'm willing to believe it was good once.

Nancy is stylistically interesting, right, but crap.

Garfield is profoundly lazy crap, and yet I loved it as a kid.

The one about the French Foreign Legion taught me everything I know about French colonization of Nort Africa.

Once or twice. But I was young and foolish.

                              Felix the Cat however, never.

Which cartoon is it that appears in either the Saturday Guardian or Observer magazine (sorry E10!) set in a coffee shop. It's never been funny, but the edition recently where it "revealed" to "hilarious" effect that making to-do lists can put off actually doing things was a nadir.

Is this the Marmaduke the US posters are referring to? As in this not-fondly remembered cartoon from my childhood? (He looks like a Scooby-Doo knock-off.)

All the free London papers have appalling cartoons, it stresses me out to see them emerge as I turn the page. I can't see past the cartoon in the OP though. Abysmal.

No, Marmaduke was already around for ages before Scooby-Doo.

But this was actually a Scooby-Doo knock off that I recall watching as a kid.

                                          Those kids look particularly pesky.

Edit - I was referring to that Scooby Doo sin-off thing.

Of course having missed my slot and the thread having moved to another page then my whimsical little aside has even less relevance.

That's the point - all the jokes were excruciatingly obvious. And in the rare case of subtlety, they put a little sign up in the background.
