I'm not interested in declinism. I'm more worried about the amount of money that France is going to need to borrow to smooth things over in the next recession if it is borrowing at least 3% of GDP in the 'good times'. and how quickly that is going to translate into Bankruptcy. Those are problems that you can't will/tantrum out of existence.

This poll is a good illustration of the "we hate everybody" attitude currently holding sway among the French electorate

Terrible explosion due to a gas leak in a bakery on Rue de Trevise in the IXe arrondissement this morning (two blocks from the Grands Boulevards Metro).

Two firemen are dead; ten other people are seriously injured; another 40 have less serious injuries.

The French far right (including Le Pen and those even more extreme) are currently losing their collective minds over the Treaty of Aix la Chapelle (aka Aachen), which was agreed by Macron and Merkel last year and is to be signed in a few days.

The text of the Treaty is full of bromides about enhancing Franco-German cooperation in various spheres, but the loons are using Facebook and other outlets to claim that it will return Alsace and Lorraine to Germany and force France to share its nuclear arsenal and permanent seat on the UN Security Council with the Germans.

It hasn’t yet been proven that this is a Steve Bannon joint, but it is awfully reminiscent of the stories about how NAFTA required the abandonment of the Dollar for the Amero (a fictional joint currency).

Well, it was inevitable, but the Gilets Jaunes have formally launched a political party for the European elections.

Saw a bunch of yellow jacket wanks in Dublin on an anti-vax demo the other week on Benburb St disturbing my brunch. Some were also carrying anti fluoride in the water signs. There seems a common thread of pig ignorant stupidity to direct democracy freaks. Hopefully they will be too busy arguing over their personal pet prejudices/conspiracy theory to get elected in France or elsewhere.

Though I'm sure fucking Peter Casey will pick up an Irish Midlands seat with the help of a Gemma O'Doherty Jordan Peterson fanboy haggard masturbator frog emoji type/pig ignorant racist contrarian pub bore divorced dad/paranoid ma alliance.

And the gilets jaunes have now been countered by the foulards rouges.

There is an excellent graphic novel covering Sarkozy & Kadhafi that traces how the Libyan leader bankrolled Sarko's presidential campaign.
Sarko then brought him in from the cold, restoring diplomatic relations after the release of the Bulgarian nurses and making trade deals.
Things went sour when Kadhafi began to stretch his power, funding the launch of an African telecom satellite, confronting Goldman Sachs handling of Libyan cash and failing to follow through on buying French equipment.
The French engineered his downfall via a UN resolution and then abandoned Libya to chaos.

A complex tale but v well presented, highly recommended.
A thick slice of the Libyan cash was diverted by Sarko's entourage - the French justice system is still plodding after the parties involved, notably Claude Gueant who over a period of 10 years withdrew only EUR 800 from his bank account !

So, le Frexit est mort, and the National Rally also have scrapped the idea of leaving the euro, instead wanting ECB reform, the abolition of the European Commission in favour of a strengthened Council, but the grand tradition of Le Pen contradictions never changes - she wants MEPs composed of national parliamentary delegations, yet still states this doesn't preclude popular elections?

Sarkozy has lost his last appeal (to the Cour de cassation) and will now have to go on trial in the criminal courts for the illegal financing that loose cannon highlights above.

It has only been seven years since the underlying events and close to five since they were first exposed.

It appears RN (formerly the FN) have won control of Perpignan - that said, the left has a decent chance of winning in Lyon, Marseille and retaining Paris.

More particularly, it seems the Greens have taken Lyon, Strasbourg and Bordeaux, and could win Lille.

If the Socialists and the Greens could coalesce around an agreed candidate, they could reach the presidential run-off, otherwise it'll be Macron vs Le Pen again in 2022.

Remarkable result for the Greens, who have zero deputies in parliament.

Francois Fillon has just been found guilty in the fictitious employment scandal and sentenced to five years in prison (two suspended) and ten years of electoral ineligibility. An appeal is certain.

Bordeaux should actually be in green on that map (which is quite the coup.)

The woman elected in Marseille is also a Green politician, although she ran as part of a left alliance list.
