A kick in the teeth for science? Or religion?

A kick in the teeth for common sense, at least.

Court rules that belief in climate change is a religion, and therefore people can't be sacked for believing in it.

My jaw is still dangling on the floor.

Well, to be fair, a "moral imperative" derived from climate change science would indeed be a philosophical position and presumably protected. But it's not at all clear whether or not it was relevant in the sacking. It doesn't speak well for Grainger, though, that they (apparently) wouldn't give carbon data to their head of sustainability.

      Jesus, yes. Where to begin?

Let's start with the fact that your job seems to be protected if you can show that your opinions aren't based on evidence, and not protected if they are.

This is a very bad thing, the guy's being selfishly counterproductive and I hope it's shot down on appeal.
