    Obscure DOS game help required

Not sure anyone will be able to help me with this, but before IO run off and join the abandonia forums or summat I thought I'd check with you guys since I know there's some ol- uh, I mean seasoned gamers here

When I was a about...13? I had a demo of a PC game, which I think ran in DOS. In this game, you built a giant fighting robot, complete with guns for arms and all that, and then fought other robots, avoided obstacles, gun turrets, that sort of thing.

So far so standard, as there are about a million old PC games with this style of play. However, this wasn't a 3d game with an inside the cockpit view, nor was it part of any mechwarrior or battletech franchise. Instead it was a top down (or possibly slightly slanted...) viewpoint, quite cartoony and looked a bit like a more sedate Alien Breed...

Any clues? I'm going mental looking for it.

No...it was (I think - maybe 1996?) a little earlier than that, and you only controlled the one robot. Also, there was no sort of intergalactic war storyline, just a kind of "battle arena" setting.

      Thanks for the suggestion though.

There were/are a lot of shareware games built around that sort of idea, but I can't think of many mainstream ones. Then again, I didn't start playing games on PC until the very end of the DOS era.

It sounds more like Mech Warrior to me.

It was a lot more light hearted than that (i know, light hearted giant killing machines, but hey ho), and I think it was British.

MechWarrior was 3D, Pinback. Also, it was a MechWarrior game.

Ooh, British? Maybe Z by the Bitmap Brothers?

                  Space Hulk, perhaps?

My first thought was Heavy Gear but I think that was 3D.

How great a game was MechCommander? Best RTS game I can remember playing.

.. and I was actually thinking of BattleTech, GY. So I was only wrong on three counts.

Speaking of Space Hulk, there's a fantastic, free, definitely-not-ripped-off PC version of the board game here
