TG, you could try telling him it's "fewer shaven heads". I mean, that's what I'd do.

I, however, do have that experience. I see the freeloaders, the work-shy, the criminal, and the immoral and everything that they get up to. They are of every colour and creed imaginable, but unfortunately the balance swings in one direction.

Integration, education, tolerance, unity and brotherly love don't work. The other alternative is not very palatable, but it may well be the only one that is left to us.
How does one respond to that?
I'd ask him to describe in detail what that "unpalatable alternative" of his might be, let him expose his true colors.

On Volvos in N.America: it's mostly the older, used ones have that leftie cachet, the new ones being more upscale. That doesn't apply in the ice belt as much of course, cars having a much shorter lifespan due to winter rust.

I should be fair and say it was only a handful of posters on that site that made such dodgy comments.
And those people were from Stoke on Trent, Oldham and Burnley so i guess some of their opinions should not come as much as a surprise.

I am having serious reservations about getting a Volvo.

I know that being a Guardian reader, i should not be driving, and should probably be riding a mule or walking about in organic sandals, but if i must drive, what car do you think i should get that says ,that i am a lefty Liberal member of the thought police (i was accused of this too).

It's weird, that thing about lefties driving shit, old cars. Those things usually have appalling emissions profiles, and generally rubbish fuel economy too by the time they get that old. You'd be better off buying something newer and leaner-burning.

The Thought Police get rubbish cars now. Back in the 70s they got massive Thought Ford Granadas. Even the Thought Sweeney have had to cut back.

I've read that the overall footprint is larger when buying a new car, regardless of the improvement in emissions and fuel economy. But I can't quote my source, so take that for what it's worth. Unless, of course, you're talking about a massive '70s gas guzzler or something.

So many questions... like how do you carry out a count of the work-shy? After all, they don't exactly make it easy for you. They stay in bed all day and only venture out at night for chips and cheap lager.

Plus it's positive reinforcement init. He notices the 'brown' workshy more as he's already programmed to look for them and well, they're not like him.

But at the end of the day, when it comes to a battle of wits, you can't fight an unarmed man. Ignore the Volvo board. You need to buy another Audi as Jeremy Clarkson says that they are driven by cocks and you don't want to bring the average down do you?

People have married, divorced, had kids, come out and even died since I have been on OTf.

Nothing though has made me contemplate how many years I have idled time away on this esteemed forum than the fact that former Playa TG is considering buying a Volvo.

Old people drive Volvos. Then they take up precious minutes of my life trying to remember how to negotiate fucking roundabouts.

Seeing as you are registered TG, try suggesting that an influx of two million impoverished refugees could quite easily be balanced by shipping off to some foreign shore, Sweden preferably, every senile hat-wearing old fool who dawdles their way out onto the roads on a Sunday in their fucking Volvos.

So do lefties not drive 2CVs any more? I loved those cars.

TGs problem is that if you want a car the size of a Volvo what are your options? BWM? Audi?

But it would be a bit difficult to argue that immigration shouldn't be a matter for debate?
But it is. I mean, there's probably no domestic political issue that's been debated more in the last decade. Howard made immigration the centrepiece of his election campaign, for heaven's sake.

That's my point. As in, therefore, it's very difficult to justify refusing the BNP a 'platform for debate' on the grounds of racism, since they tie their racism so closely to the issue of immigration.

Well, not many political parties' leaders have been convicted of inciting racial hatred or find it hard to explain their position on the holocaust, so I don't think it's too difficult.

Indeed, Lyra, you were responding to me and sorry for not replying sooner. I think there is a legitimate debate to be had about immigration and I wish the main political parties had been more courageous in defence of its benefits on Question Time, as well as the reality of it (stats such as the amount of white immigration, also stats as regards emigration). I think groups like the BNP have managed to take advantage of the mainstream political silence on this issue and sow their own fear, loathing and suspicion, which is now infecting the public discourse. Which makes it all the worse for me that they were allowed a platform.

WoE - you drive a SAAB? Most times I have heard reasoning for owning a saab is that it has extremely good torque, which is handy for pulling a caravan.

I see the point on the Audi, but the A4 is quite nice, and with some of the models they are quite impressive (wouldn't buy one myself mind - except for an R8, but I doubt he has one of those).

A volvo is an altogether giving up on things kind of car. The audi shows at least that he was trying.
