Dunking biscuits more dangerous than cyclists

It will interesting to see how the Mail cover this.

Ah, "commissioned research". What Ben Goldacre calls "PR-reviewed articles".

Research company Mindlab International were commissioned by Rocky, a chocolate biscuit bar, to conduct the research.
It would be simpler for everyone involved if they just agreed to put up a free advert for the chocolate bar, and did away with the pretense of there being a piece of news to report.

That's an interesting looking circular biscuit in the picture. What sort is that?

Erm, guys, I wasn't entirely serious.

I tell you what though, I really fancy a cup of tea and a delicious new Rocky milk chocolate bar, available at all good supermarkets now

That's a coconut ring. You should never dunk with one of them - they're far too frail when saturated. Either that's a mock-up or the camera has a very fast exposure setting. Either way, you shouldn't linger when dunking one.

By the way, I remember a series of readers' letters in New Scientist, where someone asked why some biscuits went hard when left out and some went soft. The exchange of views went on for some time, but eventually it was stated that whether a biscuit went hard or soft was down to their relative salt or sugar content. (Annoyingly, I can't remember which way round it is - which makes them go soft and which makes them go hard.) I seem to remember that, in discussing that phenomenon, it was established whether Jaffa Cakes qualify as a cake or a biscuit. Even more annoyingly, I can't remember what the result there was, either!

Perhaps if I have a drink it'll help me remember?

Ah yes. This is sure to help.

                  Oh look - a squirrel!

It was determined in the Jaffa Cake suit that, at least for VAT purposes, cakes go hard and biscuits go soft.

There you go... I knew that either GY or WE would know the answer!

Do you mind if we refer collectively to you as 'WEGY' in future? You do almost represent the OTF 'hive mind' when it comes to academia, after all.

It's a good rule for the VAT thing. I can't think of a cake that would get softer with age but if you bake biscuits like cookies that are deliberately squidgy in the middle they will harden. If they live that long.

Damn it now I'm in danger of making biscuits. I really don't need to be making biscuits.

The Jaffa Cake topic has come up on here many times before.

Point of order, "Rocky" isn't a new biscuit - I remember years ago they were fronted by annoying cartoon Geordie sparrow.

Yeah, Rocky Robin - "They're chockablock, man."

They were great, Rocky bars, an all. They released a caramel version which wasn't so good. As often with biscuits, simplicity is key.

The Rocky was a staple in my school lunchbox. That, a taxi or a Gold bar. Now Gold bars. They were special.

They've just released a caramel version of the Chunky Kit Kat. Which, surely, is just a Lion Bar without the nobbly bits.

And thanks for the Wide-Field camera's example of excellent Socialist, Socialised Space Research from the US. It's basically communism by any other name.

                                            Reece's Pieces.

The picture reminds me of something else from my childhood: crunchy, sweet shell, with somesort of nutty filling... something like that. They came in big jars, and you had to buy by weight.

Those Reese's Pieces are grotesque. I like peanut butter and I like chocolate, but somehow they manage to ruin both. And they stick to your teeth and make your fillings ache like they do when you're working in a high voltage transformer room.
