The latest edition of Viz has a big long article on Michael Jackson, which may well be the funniest thing they have ever written. You simply must read it.

I'm sure that this has probably been done on here before, but that whole supermarkets instead of paper shops thing must have knackered the specialist magazine market almost as much as the internet, as they always seem to have such a rubbish choice, no doubt centrally directed.
Wasn't there a thing in WSC a few years ago about WHSmith's, that they were going to stop stocking WSC and we should lobby them to continue carrying it?

I used to be an avid Viz reader, but it began to get a bit stale and the jokes a bit repetetive, especially the established characters like Spoilt Bastard and The Fat Slags. Viz is best when it's caricaturing celebrities, the Bono sketch that was linked on a recent thread on here was utterly hilarious.
I still see Viz in most newsagents to be honest, but rarely see WSC. Most shops just carry FourFourTwo and the individual Big4(TM) club magazines, hence the reason I subscribed, which has the added advantage of it arriving a couple of days earlier.

The Michael Jackson tribute section is magnificant. The Tony Arsehole article had me light headed with laughter.

I loved the line about "they called him the Peter Pan of Pop - perhaps because he would never grow up, or maybe because he used to unexpectedly appear in children's bedrooms at night".

James Bolam's Nolan Golems- made in his caravan whilst waiting for the new series of When the Boat Comes In or the Beiderbecke Affair or something.
I loved that recent 'Princesses of Our Hearts' commemorative model of Lady Di & Jade Goody playing table tennis.
Also loved the payoff line from 'The Adventures of Sting in Space'-"God he was an arsehole".

Well on the recomendation of this thread I bought it for the first time in years. The MJ stuff was funny, espically the lighter advert.
Also liked the letters pages. The one about has anyone seen La Toya Jackson recently as he has a £50 bet to settle.

Millie Tant isn't funny at all. Not because it mocks The Feminists (all belief systems, even good ones, are worthy of a pop), but it's just not believable or accurate or sharp - in the way that Sid the Sexist can be.
Roger Mellie's remarkably durable though - always manages to hit the spot.

My favourite characters were Spawny Get and Farmer Palmer (I spent a few years involved in agriculture and can tell you there was quite some resemblance to real life). Another funny one was Finbarr Saunders, I still try to work the phrase "I'm taking your mother (wife etc.) on a tour of the north-west, first I'm going to Oldham, then I'm going to Bangor." into any conversation possible...like this one.

Agreed on the Michael Jackson piece, though.

Never read the Millie Tant and always skip anything by the cartoonist who draws "The Modern Parents" as I don't like his style of drawings. Or the "storyline".
The 1950's Beano Comic pisstakes and Sid The Sexist are always highlights for me.

I miss Viz. I used to love Black Bag the Faithful Border Bin Liner. And the Pathetic Sharks of course. And Jellyhead, and the Modern Parents. Spoilt Bastard. Student Grant. Spawny Get. Terry Fuckwit. Victorian Dad. Meddlesome Ratbag. Postman Plod the Miserable Bastard!
the internets seem to be a breeding ground for Mr Logics, too

Mr Logic is a bit dark likesay; based on the man's brother, who was later diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. Which, if you read the strip, is obviously what it's about. Benefit of hindsight an all that, but it's a little uncomfortable anyway.
Generally I like Viz, but it's a bit hit and miss.

"That particular character seems to have been knocking around for donkeys years, but the jokes didn't seem to have moved on much. "
That's true of pretty much all the old-timey characters, isn't it? With the possible exception of Roger Mellie as there always some new TV format to pastiche. The only long time features I really enjoy are Jack Black and Gilbert Ratchet, plus the letters/tips and the Profanisaurus. Other than that, it's only the "news" stories and those bizarre one-off one-joke strips that hold any appeal.
