    The Robot Top-5

For my all-star top 5, I've gone for Bender Rodriguez, Marvin, Mechagodzilla, R2D2 and Robcop's ED-209.

    No computers please!

If it doesn't have Short Circuit's Number 5, then it's not a proper list of robots.

        Twiki? Dear Lord.

Twiki was the Scrappy-Doo of robots.

The Madcat Battlemech, here represented by this fetching treehouse:

          obviously:

          The new one, controversially:

Ultron, because evil is wicked cool:

          And Starscream, for similar reasons:

            The Madcat isn't a robot.
What are our limits here? Could I nominate a Culture drone?

A robot is a virtual or mechanical artificial agent. In practice, it is usually an electro-mechanical system which, by its appearance or movements, conveys a sense that it has intent or agency of its own.
It's a robot. It's not self-aware, and it's a vehicle, but it's a robotic vehicle. I would say, as it seems to have it's own intent when it's moving, the Madcat counts as a robot.

Are we only doing self-aware robots?

              If so, i'll have him:

Hmmm. I don't think that robots have to be self aware to make this list but the Madcat (is that a Madcat treehouse? It looks like a Catapult) on first though falls on the side of being a vehicle rather than a robot, but then thinking about it what is an AT-AT? Both that and the Madcat need crew to work but then KIT can have a driver... I may need to think about this more.

Yeah it's a tricky one. I was thinking AT-AT as well. Crew is an issue, but look at a Transformer - they are definitely robots, but some can carry humans in them - so it can't be the fact it's a vehicle that's a problem.

At the same time, I don't think any of us are going to dispute the example of remote controlled robots, so it's not the human control that's an issue.

And yes, apparently that is a tree house. It would make a great catapult though.

One day I'll work out how to put pictures onto this site. Then my list will be awesome (actually I've only thought of two and a half, but it'll be great. Honest.)

Robocop wasn't technically a robot - "he" was a cyborg.

The robot in 'A Grand Day out' who dreams of skiing.

                                                  Not everyone agrees with me though;

"The robot is fulfilling his base urges, his perverted gratification at his exploits should be mocked and not applauded. He degrades himself and that which he stands for. As guardian of The Moon and its cheese he failed in his mission. He brought shame on his creators and worse still he debases his credibility further with tawdry acts of pleasure. Sure, being a kill-machine is unpleasant but it's true; there's honour in his task. He rejected that honour once he donned his silly ski-hat."
