What is it with grapes and hospitals?

It's a bit of a luxury among the fruit, innit?
I don't quite understand why it must be so much more expensive than oranges or apples, but never mind.

Why do people always buy grapes when they visit someone taken in to a hospital?

I read about this yonks ago, but I can't remember the exact story.

It's a 19c century thing, and it has something to do with the fact that green grapes are the fastest way known to get sugar into the blood system. You can buy green grape juice at chemists for that reason.

But I can't remember exactly why it used to be so important to get sugar into your loved-ones blood system back in the day.

And not the far back in the day. Why else would Lucozade exist? Grapes and lucozade for a hospital visit and the only time I remember drinking original lucozade was when I was ill.

Good point about Lucozaid I'd forgotten about that, I was only given Lucozaid when I was at at home sick.

When did they re-invent themselves as a sports drink?

It must have been a while ago - didn't they have an advert with Daley Thompson? The reason was just that association with illness, wasn't it?
