almost every final could have been ger-arg

1966. The overenthusiastic ref doesn't send off Rattin, Argentina wear England down and in the end it is they down to ten men as Stiles loses it.

1978. West Germany turn up as the team they would be two years later, and hump Austria and Holland in the second round group.

1982. Diego Maradona evades the murderous intentions of Brazil and Italy's defenders and lights up the second phase, taking Argentina past them and then Poland into the final.

1994. Argentina beats Romania, then Sweden, then continues its hoodoo over Brazil. Germany beat Bulgaria, then beat Italy on pens.

1998. Bergkamp misses in the last minute against Argentina and the Dutch lose on penalties. Argentina go on to beat Brazil. Germany, meanwhile, cruise past Croatia then end the French party.

2002. Beckham misses his penalty against Argentina, by blasting it straight down the middle, and a shell-shocked England lose. Argentina go on to meet Brazil in the quarter-final and beat them again.

Of course, 1974 could have been Ger-Arg as well.

2006: Van Basten's thugs manage to manufacture a penalty kick for themselves, in the 90th minute of their third, and mostly meaningless, group match against Argentina. Argentina and Germany end up in opposite sides of the draw.

2010: Ghana decide that first place in their group is worth playing for and beat Germany. Germany subsequently end up in the opposite side of the draw to Argentina, who are managed by somebody who is not called Diego Maradona.

They'd have had to get past Portugal before Germany. None of Argentina's matches were pretty, but that would have been a new frontier of ugly.

It feels like every world cup final has had either Germany or Argentina in it (or both of course) since 1974.

That's a little discouraging, isn't it? I suppose it's self-serving as a USA fan but I'd really like to see some new teams and new regions get in there. Korea made it to the semis in 2002 but have since faded badly. Croatia made a similar run in 1998 but have been mostly shit since then.

This year's semis - at least before they were played - looked like the equivalent of Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, and Kentucky appearing in the Final Four. Borrringg.

Ricin, Argentina didn't just lose to England in 2002 because of beckham's penalty, they also lost because they were awful

Argentina had more than a couple of chances to level with England in 2002, IIRC.

Agree that one or two 'new faces' would've been preferable in 2014. So close Algeria, Colombia, Tico, etc.

1982 assumes Argentina (with Passarella et al) were more sinned against than sinning. You'd have to counterbalance the protection of Maradona with similar protection for Zico and Rossi.

It's fluky that Arg & Ger are usually in opposite sides of the draw whereas Arg & Bra tend to clash before the final (74, 78, 82, 90)

This year was the first time Argentina had been in the semi-finals since Italia '90.

Uruguay's SF in 2010 was their first since 1970. Conversely Uruguay and Argentina are both past winners.

However, Ghana got very close in 2010, as did Cameroon in 1990, and of course this time Colombia and Costa Rica weren't far away.

Of course, yes. I was just putting the counter-argument to it feeling like a familiar lineup (I'm only 30, remember; I can't really remember 1990).

                                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Four_%28college_basketball%29

A major reason why so many people follow the college basketball tournament is that there are usually a few David v. Goliath type victories in the early rounds, often featuring improbably victories that few people could find on a map. Usually, these teams are then eliminated in the second or third rounds, but in recent years some smaller schools without big fanbases or a lot of historical success have made it all the way to the semis or the final, which makes it all much much more interesting to the casual or neutral fan. So the four I listed there would be the opposite of that - four perennial powerhouses that nobody who didn't go to those schools likes.
