Got 13 other people at work to go in on one, each person gets two teams (I excluded Australia, Algeria, Iran, and Honduras from the draw). I ended up with Colombia and Greece. One lucky bastard got Brazil and Germany.

Neither workplace (my home institution nor the one where I'm external examiner) has done a sweepstake this year, where both usually do. For broadly similar reasons: restructuring, demoralisation, 'can't face talking to certain people' etc etc

Very sad, but a mark of the mood in HE in Britain today.

I had a notion to organise one last minute today, use it as an excuse to tour the building collecting for the Lambeth College indefinite strike...but then our exam board kicked off (by which I mean trouble/ructions/tears/abuse) and I was firefighting the fallout from that instead.

Wish I was on holiday, but the start of the WC will have to do.

We had a prediction competition - Groups/Knockout/Qtrs/Semis/Final (3rd place not included, apparently)

I won!

(Thanks largely to predicting Germany beating Argentina in the Final, causing a Red Rum-stylee sprint to the winning post from the elbow on the last day.)
