European Teams Decade by Decade Fluctuations

I have awarded 3 points for a tournament win (WC or EC), 2 points RU, 1 point SF:

    1970-78: Germany 9, Netherlands 5, Italy 3, Czechia 3, USSR 2, Hungary 1, Belgium 1, Yugoslavia 1, Poland 1 (World Cups: Brazil 5, Germany 4, Netherlands 4, Italy 3, Argentina 3, Poland 1, Uruguay 1)

    1980-88: Germany 8, Italy 5, France 5, Netherlands 3, Belgium 3, Spain 2, USSR 2, Poland 1, Portugal 1, Denmark 1, Czechia 1 (World Cups: Germany 4, Italy 3, Argentina 3, France 2, Poland 1, Belgium 1)

    1990-98: Germany 8, France 4, Denmark 3, Italy 3, Netherlands 2, England 2, Czechia 2, Sweden 2, Croatia 1, Bulgaria 1 (World Cups: Brazil 5, France 3, Germany 3, Italy 3, Argentina 2, England 1, Croatia 1, Netherlands 1, Sweden 1, Bulgaria 1)

    2000-08: Italy 5, Germany 5, France 5, Portugal 4, Spain 3, Greece 3, Netherlands 2, Turkey 2, Russia 1, Czechia 1 (World Cups: Brazil 3, Italy 3, Germany 3, France 2, South Korea 1, Portugal 1, Turkey 1)

    2010-18: Spain 6, Germany 6, France 5, Portugal 4, Netherlands 3, Croatia 2, Italy 2, Belgium 1, Wales 1, England 1 (World Cups: Germany 4, Spain 3, France 3, Netherlands 3, Croatia 2, Argentina 2, Uruguay 1, England 1, Belgium 1, Brazil 1)

    Rankings by team per decade:

    Germany 1, 1, 1, 1=, 1=

    Italy 3=, 2=, 3=, 1=, 6=

    France N/A, 2=, 2, 1=, 3

    Netherlands 2, 4=, 5=, 7=, 5

    Portugal N/A, 8=, N/A, 4, 4

Germany have never been beaten across a whole decade in this period. This was Italy's first decade outside the Top 3 and thus proof of decline. France have been top 3 or equal since bursting through in 1982. Portugal have become as big as Netherlands. Jury is out on whether Spain 2008-12 was a blip, albeit a very big one.

Slightly adjust the scoring to 4-2-1 per tournament and Italy and France edge Germany for the 2000s and Spain still romp this decade based on just 2010 and 2012.

And I think on the back of a beermat that mechanism would have the USSR on top in the 1960s.

Unless you give extra points to World Cups, which for the 60s would be warranted (but not later).

Yes, those European Championships in 1960 and 1964 come loaded with asterisks. But then, so would the first two World Cups in 1930 and 1934.

                Cheers, DG.

Russia being 5th in Europe is an indictment of the depth of the field but I assume it won't last.

                Elo?

Elo ratings (after the Hungarian mathematician) are based on those used in chess. FIFA are moving to a similar system

What do the numbers in the coloured boxes indicate? I can't fathom them out at all.

Ranking in each qualifying tournament. Obv only really relevant for non-qualifiers

Elo seems to recognise historical achievement while having a recency factor built in. Probably more subtle and up to date than FIFA's system.

No system can deal with the sudden collapse of the Netherlands.
