    Trophyless major football nations

I think it's not an outrageous idea to suggest that the talented Sweden side of the early 1990s might well have qualified for 1992, even in the 8-team format. And the Sweden team of 1958 had Europe's best forward line. They probably would have qualified anyway.

Sweden were absolutely on their arse after Italia 90 (in which Scotland beat them convincingly btw). The two years of friendlies after the World Cup gave them the time and scope to build a decent team without the hindrance of having to win qualifying points.

Scotland were great at Euro 92 and very unlucky in a vicious group, especially against Germany.

I've always maintained that Euro 92 is Scotland's best ever major tournament performance. Two defeats and a victory hardly sounds like much but they were extraordinarily unlucky against both the Dutch and the Germans. Horsing Russia (or CIS as it was at the time) was a cracking performance.
