Nice little Scotland Euro 92 story

Andy Roxburgh was the Scotland coach and while it was easy to see that he had been a schoolteacher, his fussy nature aside he was quite un-Scottish like with his meticulous preparation for games.

Scotland were drawn to play Germany in the Championships, so him and Craig Brown went to see them and pored over videos of them in action. Coaches Alex Smith and Alex McLeish were brought in for their opinion too and all four of them agreed that they thought German right back Stefan Reuter was their weak link.

Germany beat Scotland 2-0 in Norrkoping and afterwards Roxburgh and Brown had a chat with German manager Berti Vogts. They told him that each day in training the Scots put on a board the names of the best and worst of the day. The person who was nominated as the worst was said to be 'having a Reuter'. In five-a-sides the least successful team was known as the Reuter team and any glaring individual mistake a player made was called 'a Reuter'

Berti came back with "Oh that's interesting. We did exactly the same thing but with an Ally McCoist team" Ally was delighted to hear this story and they still joke about it to this day. Craig Brown nominated his Worst XI of Euro 92 in a newspaper as:

Reuter; Reuter, Reuter, Reuter, Reuter; Reuter, Reuter, Reuter, Reuter; McCoist, Reuter.

That was such a good Scotland side. That we qualified for an 8 team Euro seems quite unbelievable now (our group was relatively easy but still contained Hagi's Romania and Stoichkov's Bulgaria, not to mention a Swiss side containing Chapuisat and Knup). We performed admirably against Germany and Netherlands but lost both games. In the final game we trounced a CIS side with a number of class players and who still had a chance to go through. We also had the darkest blue strip we have every had and really looked liked we meant business.
