Worst Performances by Individuals in Matches

England is obviously a rich seam:

    PNev v Rumania, 2000

    Hoddle (+ 10 others) v USSR, 1988

1992: Carlton Palmer et al. Keith Curle?

My main memory of great player foundering at a tournament is Matthaeus in Euro 2000.

Maradona in USA 94? Couldn't really be a lot worse in terms of a great player failing.

I think he played well in the two games in which he appeared but obviously had used illegitimate means to achieve weight loss.

His poor displays were at Italia 90, such as the final.

Maradona single-handedly got Argentina to the Final in 1990. And he was a class apart when running the game against Nigeria in 1994.

What the fuck is wrong with you people?

Yeah, they should go back to that European Championship format and allow those South American teams to play again, get rid of that World Cup title nonsense.

Sergio Goycochea single-handedly got Argentina to the final of Italia 90. Maradona even went as far as missing his penalty in the shoot-out v Yugoslavia (but Goycochea saved two Yugo ones).

As for worst performance, and sticking with the Yugoslavia theme: I seem to recall that Sinisa Mihajlovic's efforts vs Slovenia in 2000 were so awful - having a hand in all 3 Slovene goals and then getting himself sent off - that there was talk on here (well, the old OTF board) that he was mounting a one-man effort to throw the game.

Yeah, Goycochea and Caniggia were at least as important as Maradona, probably more so, in getting that Argentina team so far.

But for me the worst performance in the European championships would have to be Angola's collapse against Mali in the 2010 opening game where they threw away a 4-0 lead in the last ten minutes.

Argentina - and Brazil, for that matter - have never even qualified for the tournament. Shows how good they are.

Anyway, having cemented that point: England fans vs Belgium in 1980? Does that count? (That tournament was the moment that Belgium officially became 'quite good'.)

But sherioushly - Lineker had something of a horror vs Ireland in 1988. He missed a series of sitters Adebayor would've been proud of.

He should never have been picked for that game seeing as he was struggling with glandular fever or something at the time.

erm, he had contracted hepatitis, perhaps as a result of lifestyle issues.
