Terrible sportswriters

I think the sportswriters he's waxing nostalgic about (Dan Jenkins, Bud Shrake, Blackie Sherrod, et al.) probably seemed like a breath of fresh air at the time because they tried to entertain with their columns and focused on lots of the absurdities surrounding sports rather than just presenting game reports. But as with lots of journalism, their writing hasn't aged particularly well. I remember finding Semi-Tough semi-funny when I read it back in high school, but now Jenkins writes boring books about golf and railed, unbidden, against hippies and liberals in Austin in an interview I read with him a few years ago (also in Texas Monthly). So I'd say he hasn't aged particularly well, either.

The trouble with that Texas piece is that I thought the stuff the bloke quoted approvingly was pretty thin.
