    Cricket World Cup qualifiers

Sam Beckett, Noel Cantwell, Eoin Morgan. Your boys took one hell of a beating...

If the pacy Pathans go all the way to the World Cup finals in 2011, will poor old England have to pull out of the tournament to avoid playing them?

      Cricket World Cup qualifiers

      From cricinfo.com:

So what is at stake for the eight sides on Friday and what do they need to do?

Ireland - nothing but glory at stake for them against Kenya, although defeat would mean they could still be pipped at the top of the table by Canada, although they are guaranteed to be in the 1st/2nd play-off and a place at the 2011 World Cup.

Canada - a win over Netherlands will guarantee them at least second place and World Cup qualification. Such is their NRR that a loss would still see them finish in the top four unless there were some remarkable results elsewhere and they were to lose heavily.

Kenya - it will be interesting to see what the effect of Wednesday's humiliation at the hands of Namibia will have, and from what seemed like a stroll to the World Cup, they now have to beat Ireland to ensure they make it. If they lose, then it is quite likely they will miss out, although their ODI status seems safe barring another catastrophic performance.

Netherlands - a win will almost ensure them a top four finish as Kenya and UAE, the only sides who could overtake them, have considerably inferior NRR. If they lose then they will be left sweating on other results, but they are at least guaranteed ODI status for the next four years.

UAE - the crucial match, against Scotland. If they win, they are guaranteed ODI status, and if one of Netherlands or Kenya lose then it's a World Cup place as well. But so narrow is the margin that if they lose then their NRR is so bad that they are likely to miss out on even ODI status.

Namibia - if they lose to Afghanistan then they miss out altogether. If they win then they need two out of Kenya, Netherlands and UAE to lose to bring it down to NRR for the remaining World Cup place, but ODI status would be assured.

Afghanistan - after a remarkable year, they are within one win of completing the fairytale. A loss to Namibia and it's all over, but a win and, like Nambia, they need two out of Kenya, Netherlands and UAE to lose to bring it down to NRR for a World Cup place. Theirs is not as good as Namibia's, however, and the win will need to be convincing. But the headlines would still be made as they would gain ODI status.

Scotland - the real surprise, and for all the wrong reasons. Such is their NRR that a World Cup place is almost certainly beyond them, but if they beat UAE then they will salvage their ODI status at least. A loss and their dreams of professionalism, not to mention lucrative ODIs against England and other touring sides, will disappear for the next four years. Whatever happens, the inquests are likely to start almost as soon as the players

Two of my mates are in the Dutch team, Eric 'the viking' Swarczynski and Pete Borren. They play for my club and are a good pair of lads.

Eric did well at the start of the tour scoring 50 odd against Hampshire and 98 against Glamorgan, but he's gone off the boil a bit in the competition proper. We could do with some runs from him today.

Pete is the vice captain, and an OTF reader-but-non-contributor. He was a member of the Kiwis Under 19 World Cup winning squad in 2003 along with Jessie Ryder and Lou Vincent. He got injured early in the tournament but has started to pick up runs and wickets recently - figures of 10/1/35/1 against Canada this morning.

        Here's his tournament blog...

          Live Scores here.

Things are looking very good for TPC's mates, who need only 18 runs off of the last 36 balls. The Afghans are also well placed, with Nambibia down to its last 2 wickets and trailing by 59 runs with only 39 balls remaining. The UAE are in trouble against the Scots, while the Kenya/Ireland match is finely poised.

The Afghans have just won (by 21 runs), and actually have a shot at qualifying, as the UAE are down to their last wicket (while trailing by 127) and Kenya need 55 runs off the last 42 balls.

In any event, the Afghans have achieved ODI status, which is remarkable.

              Schade.

Duncan's boys let the rest of the world down by allowing Kenya to get 55 off of 30 and win with 12 balls left. Afghanistan finish sixth in the Super Eights.

              Your qualifiers:

              Ireland
              Canada
              Kenya
              Netherlands

Scotland retain their ODI status, and Afghanistan gains that honour.

And it is now [url=http://content.cricinfo.com/ci-icc/content/current/story/400154.html] official that they won't be playing the World Cup in Pakistan.

Surely more important for Ireland to beat Canada to potentially come top of the tree?

As for the Afgans, good they improved their status, but competing in World Cups is hardly a priority for them, given the state of their country right now.
But look forward to them playing England in about 20 years time?

Bermuda threw several million dollars at their team/program, and apparently botched this tourney up beyond all measure. Their own coach laced into them for being unprofessional.
