Another wrestler in a murder enquiry

There's a guy in my teaching program from Minnesota who always refers to Verne Gagne. Having worked with a guy who was in the Russian Army Special Forces for a few decades and who was in his late 70s, I can attest that the muscles are the last to go. He could've killed me in one or two moves. He could treat me like a rag doll.

I also found this old sports encyclopedia with all of these excellent photos. Verne Gagne was featured with his familiar picture with the AWA belt.

I watched the excellent Road Warriors DVD a few months ago, and it was hilarious what a horrible booker he was. I mean he has a giant card in Chicago at Wrigley Field (WrestleFest or something like that,) and has the Road Warriors in front of their hometown against the Freebirds. His finish ? The Freebirds smash a bell over Hawk's head for the pin, Gagne comes out and replays the end over the big screen, and declares the Freebirds are disqualified.

Now that's what the people paid for, to see some bald asshole whose final booked match was a Turkey-on-a-Pole match come out and get the pop. No one cares about you or your shitbag federation, dickwad.

I hate the AWA, and was so happy to see it go under. Obviously not happy to see this happen to that concentration-camp survivor, or Gagne suffering from dementia (although that may have been the reason for his Turkey-on-a-Pole match or the Team Challenge Series.)

The thing is, they had a great timeslot on ESPN. It was around 3:30pm, so the choice was AWA wrestling or Heathcliff (no chance if it was up against Voltron.)

But even as a 10/11-year-old, I knew that was horseshit that they were filming in front of no audiences because of "too many run-ins." It was obvious that no one gave a shit about their lame product, or Verne's push of his lame son.

Just to think that Gagne had Hulk Hogan for a whole year after Thunderlips in Rocky III, Sgt. Slaughter after the Iron Shiek feud and during his run as a character on GI Joe, the Road Warriors during their first world title run, and Superfly Snuka after the Roddy Piper feud, and went out of business in less than 2 years. Idiot.

Someone I know (and whose sources are verifiable and largely trustworthy) wrote this --

Totally worth picking up. The amount of sleaze and abuse in pro wrestling is staggering.

Read this book about a month or so ago. I know that folk 'in the biz' aren't especially taken with it - probably down to the amount of sleaze/abuse reported in it. Also liked the fact that Randazzo seems to be constantly asking "We're talking about guys pretending to beat one another up. Is it really worth it?"
Oh, and rightly or wrongly, I loved the description of Wigan as a 'dismal northern shithole'. Pretty well describes Rotherham as well, really.
