The legacy of the "Crazy Canucks" bears fruit

Canada claims its first-ever men's Alpine World Championship ski-ing gold, and in the Blue Riband event, as well - the Men's downhill

Looks like they did everything they could in a weather-affected race to give the favourites - Walchhofer and Miller - a second chance, too, but Kucera of Canada is the World Champion.

I remember the "Crazy Canucks" from watching Ski Sunday in the early 1980s. Steve Podborski. That's just one of those names you never forget, if you grew up watching Sunday night sport as a kid in Britain in that era. Like Jocky Wilson, or Alex Higgins.

It was a stunningly difficult course. Loads simply missed a gate, or had to dig an edge in really hard to make one and thereby lost any chance, just because it was so damn tough to stay on line. As Kucera himself said, his run was hardly mistake-free, he just got it down as best he could, which was good enough.

Despite Walchhofer's getting a second bite at it, he never really had a chance. You could see his legs were gone from about halfway down the course.

In the meantime, Lara Gut seamless rise to the top and future iconic role as great lady of Swiss feminine skiing continues steadily, two silvers so far and she is just 17. She is also very cute and advertisers are going to fall over themselves to have her on board. The last Swiss babe on skis, Maria Walliser, made a mint whilst arguably being not as good as Vreni Schneider.
