Have we done OMG Michael Phelps smoked pot yet?
But the only reason why kids may lose their scholarship or whatever over a single bong hit is because, in this country, the popular wisdom on marijuana is so completely bogus.
Sensible people can and are using this made up "controversy" to point that out.
I have no interest in pot and I find most stoners arguments for legalization to be spurious, except for the one that says "keeping it illegal iss far, far, far more trouble than it's worth."
I think you may be underestimating kids ability to understand nuances of these things. In my experience, young kids will understand "Michael Phelps is a great swimmer but he's also human and he did something dumb." If necessary, you can tell them "You know how sometimes Cookie Monster eats too many cookies even though he knows he shouldn't? Well Michael Phelps did something like that."
Older kids will understand "pot is not that bad, but if you do a lot of it, you'll become tedious and annoying. Do you want that? Oh, and if you really do a lot of it, your short term memory will start to go, you might raise your risk of cancer and it's not good for your lungs. And it's illegal, even though it probably shouldn't be."
If we continue to be dishonest with kids about drugs, then they aren't going to trust anything we tell them about them and are instead going to get their information from Cheech and Chong or whatever comes down the pike next.
