The official thread of the 2008/9 IceHockey Season

JyP reached the final last night, beating KalPa 4-1 in the game and by the same margin in the series. I'm not sure they've appeared in the final before. The considerable investments of the last couple of seasons are paying dividends.

The other semi-final remains tight, though last night's defensive shambles -- Blues went down in Espoo 5-7 to Kärpät -- leaves us just a solitary win from the final. Blues aren't the we're our own worst enemies of seasons gone, and can be expected to fight all the way.

From a JyP perspective, they'd probably prefer us in the final than Blues. They've been the considerable boss of us in the last couple of seasons, even last year when we won all and, at times, embarrassingly so this season.

JyP won the first game in Jyväskylä on Wednesday, the second game is tonight in Oulu. There was a brutal bit of stick related violence from a Jyp player late on in the last game, but they held off the 5 minute penalty and got a winner early in overtime.

In other news, Vaasan Sport's promotion series against Porin Ässät will go to a seventh game after an own goal in overtime last night. After winning the first game, Sport then lost the next two, with a 5-0 tonking in the third game looking to have beaten them.

Sport's coach Juhanni Tamminen has been a mini-Ferguson in this series, saying his team have no chance because of the budgets, the length of the series, and finally and most controversially, the bias of the referees. He was fined for the last comment.

Well, both series are as tight as it gets. I haven't really followed the LNA final but it's 3-3 after today's game, an OT 1-0 win by the Flyers away at Davos, the last game will take place in Zurich.

The LNA/LNB relegation/promotion final between Bienne and Lausanne is goint to the last as well. LHC started well, 2-0 up then Bienne fired their coach and suddenly remembered how to play hockey to win 3 games in a row. Tonight in Lausanne for game 6, they were favourite such was their dominance in those games but the hosts won 6-1, in an extremely bad tempered game played in front of another 9K+ sell out crowd (the series is attracing bigger crowds than the LNA final...). Last act in Bienne, the local police must be looking forward to that one, after some serious incidents when Ambri-Piotta was in town

It's over for this season. Congratulation to Davos for their 29th national title, won thanks to a 2-1 win in Kloten. They needed 7 games for the 1/4, 1/2 and final to win it!

Congratulations to Bienne for saving their skin by beating Lausanne 5-1.

Hockey in Switzerland now takes a short break before the start of the World Championships in Zurich and Bern.
