The new Trek - Segafredo team won their first race overnight - Letizia Paternoster (who was born in 1999) won the sprint in the first stage of the Tour Down Under. Bit disappointed that none of the cycling media have gone with "Paternoster lifts her arms" or something similar.

ASO have also announced the first Tour de France wildcards - Cofidis and Wanty Groupe Gobert. Little bit surprised by Wanty's inclusion - they themselves said earlier this week that they felt they only had a 50-60% chance - as their team is weaker than last year, they've still got Guillaume Martin but van Keirsbulck and Dion Smith have both left and the main signing is Loic Vliegen from BMC. Seems that ASO's rationale is that these are the top two teams in the Europe Tour.
That leaves two more places, probably between Direct Energie, Arkea-Samsic and VitalConcept. Unclear when the decision will be made of which of Calmejane, Barguil or Rolland gets to spend July at home, but L'Equipe suggests it may be after Paris-Nice in March.

Davide Rebellin, who is only 47, is racing this season with Sovac, an Algerian Continental team that primarily races in Africa and France.
And the Astana women are wearing white sleeves in Australia. Dunno if that will be the same for the men.Last edited by ursus arctos; 10-01-2019, 13:33.

Astana's back, with a brand new adventure.

Optimistic to think they're going to win Roubaix mind, the only got one rider in the first 83 finishers last year.

Education First's kit is great. I'm slightly annoyed at CCC for not keeping the splendid orange we're used to, but the excellent performance of my outsider tip Patrick Bevin makes up for it.
32 km to go, things are starting to happen - two EF riders and two Astana now in the break. This coverage is grim though - Australian adverts are hideous.

A couple of legal-style hearing news stories, with a partial link between them.
There is Jess Varnish losing her employment tribunal case against British Cycling and UK Sport. Providing a grant with conditions and criteria ‚ being employed, it appears. So Varnish has no prospect for redress for her treatment through employee protections such as gender discrimination and unfair dismissal.
As part of that case, Varnish had hoped to call evidence from Dr (for now) Richard Freeman, but he declined to appear as he has a Misconduct Hearing at the GMC to deal with. The GMC alleges that "Dr Freemanfs motive for ordering the Testogel was to administer it to an athlete to improve their athletic performance" It would be a devastating ruling for Sky if that particular allegation was upheld. At least we can be reasonably confident that Freeman won't skip this one.

I also watched a round of the KISS Series last night. For the uninitiated, it involves pro cyclists on static turbo trainers who compete against each other on the Zwift virtual reality cycling game/training programme.Team WIGGINS raced in front of an audience in very smart surroundings, whilst Eisberg Canyon appeared to be using someone's spare room (with a member of the support team wafting a pillow at the riders in order to cool them down).

Not content with winning more than Sky, Quickstep appear to be trying to steal their 'most hated team' crown too. Defending an incident which was at best a crass display of sexism and contempt, at worst sexual assault, is a bizarre hill to die on, particularly at a pre-season warmup race a month before the serious action starts. Gives me someone other than Moscon to boo, I guess.

They've finally issued an apology - presumably after the heavy hand of Deuceuninck's sponsor money weighed down on their shoulders?
Iljo Keisse is 36 years old. Honestly struggle to work out what the hell he was thinking, the twat. Mind you, he's also a did-he-didn't-he doper as well so presumably not the best at decision-making.

Yeah, it seemed they got leaned on by both Deceuninck and Specialized which forced them into an apology rather than thinking it was the right thing to do. Rather a dispiriting episode all round.
Racing in Europe started yesterday in Majorca and Cofidis won! A less good day for Mikel Landa as he fractured his collarbone.

That smart new Cofidis kit paying off already then. Today's Challenge Mallorca race has been slightly re-routed:
