Oh yeah, that Egan Bernal fella won the young rider jersey in the TDU.

A week late on this but here are the GB CX championship winners:
Helen Wyman pulled on the national stripes for a tenth time as Grant Ferguson won his maiden elite title at the HSBC UK | National Cyclo-Cross Championships.
Earlier in the day Tom Pidcock and Evie Richards put on awesome displays of powerful and precise riding to take the Under-23 titles at the Hetton Lyons Country Park.

While in the women's Junior category race there was success for Harriet Harnden, and Sean Flynn took the win in the Junior men's race.

Just caught the end of a C4 documentary about British cycling and its various scandals. anyone see it all?

            Comment

It was previously on sometime in the autumn, on the BBC not C4. Presume the programme had been given a light edit for last night's repeat to take into account the Froome case.

The original programme picked up a few headlines for Shane Sutton admitting that Sky had considered the use of TUEs to be a marginal gain. Other than that it was a procedural run through the assorted scandals of recent years. There wasn't a great deal new if you were familiar with the material, it largely confirmed a few things that could already have been guessed at - British Cycling is dysfunctional, Sutton is a dick, very little duty of care towards individuals. The programme also spent ages trawling over something relatively trivial then ran over the Varnish case really quickly - assume that would be for legal reasons.

Degenkolb won the first and last of the four Challenge Mallorca races. The field on those days doesn't seem to have been very strong but it's good to see Dege back in winning ways. The second day seems to have been the most star-studded, with Tim Wellens winning from Moson, with Valverde and Brambilla coming in a way behind them. All basically a warm-up at the moment though.

The Corriere della Sera has a detailed piece today reporting that Froome is ready to accept a negligence-based plea deal with the UCI that would result in a six or nine month ban (from the date of the infraction).

Cycling News has a decent English summary, along with a brief report of Froome's denial.

In case anyone has forgotten, Corriere (the CS in RCS) and the Giro are under common ownership

This was originally on Italian radio a couple of weekends ago, not sure what's changed for the story to burst into wider circulation now. Lappartient has hinted the UCI might suspend Froome if he isn't stood down from racing, though it isn't clear if the UCI have legal grounds to do so or if its just Lappartient grandstanding again. It might just be a hurry up to Sky and Froome to start producing an explanation. Either way it's a fucking mess and it's going to go on a good while yet.

I would posit that it being picked up by Corriere is a sign that RCS is quite annoyed at the uncertainty

JLT Condor's Ed Clancy won the HeraldSun Tour prologue this morning, ahead of Danes Mads Pedersen and Lasse Norman Hansen.

Bryan Coquard just sat up to celebrate the stage win in Etoile de Besseges only for Christophe Laporte to come past him on the line. Not the first time he's lost a race doing that...

Rather farcical day at the Comunitat Valenciana

Ben Tullett has won the men's junior cyclo-cross WC race and Evie Richards the Women's U23. With Tom Pidcock due to race tomorrow, GB have a great chance of taking a third gold.

I used to watch cyclo-cross in Yorkshire when I lived there but it always seemed a bit of a niche sport even 10 years ago. Is it something that British Cycling is specifically targeting now, or has it been a more organic development?

Very impressive win by Valverde on the queen stage of Comunitat Valenciana, as he rides away from Adam Yates in the last 300 metres. He is incredible form

Suspect the latter given that cyclocross isn't an Olympic sport. Be nice to see BC attempt to host some events again, that World Cup round in Milton Keynes was well received a few years since and you have to go all the way back to 1992 to find the last time we hosted the Worlds.

Pidcock said he wasn't feeling 100% today and came in a fair way back. Wout van Aert yet again wins the men's elite title. But a superb weekend for British CX talent - we've got the perfect mix of weather and terrain for this sport, after all. Getting the Worlds would be a great boost.

Bit of a twitter storm this morning. Froome is going to the Ruta Del Sol.

Dylan Groenewegen wins, LottoNL went early and he just managed to hold off Magnus Cort Nielsen who took a flier up the centre of the road. Kittel got baulked, never really saw Cav. Very confusing from the overhead shots given that most of the sprint teams this season are wearing red.

Should be an interesting season ahead for Groenewegen. At 24, he's only a year older than Gaviria and Ewan and has a similar number of wins to those two. I'd say that's the top three sprinters under 25 ahead of this season. I'd instinctively wanted to bracket Sam Bennett in there for some reason but he's actually the same age as Bouhanni and slightly older than Démare.

British Cycling have released the calendars for the Road Race series this year. The women's series consists of only 7 races, whereas the men have 14 races split into the usual two series (the Spring Cup and the Summer Cup GP Series) and a Circuit Series. All seems a bit thin this year.

Just checked by highlighting, six of the women's races are the same as the men's races (even if the men's ones are arranged in the different series). It's all a bit messy. Why do they say that some of the men's races are 'Circuits' but if the women race them they are 'Road' series races? And, worst of all, why are there no women's road races in April? The Women's Tour isn't until June, and the Tour de Yorkshire is in early May, so that's not the reason. For me, the Chorley and East Cleveland races stand out as obvious missed chances to host at least two more women's races this year.
