As described, that format seems set for carnage if two mens teams finish closely together.

If by "carnage" you mean "all sorts of awesome as shown here" then I agree.

Nailed on Dutch win by a mile, anyway.

Seems to be a lot of chat about Eddie Dunbar for the U23 road race today.

Cafe Roubaix has given a star rating for the subsequent pro successes of the U23 road race winners from 1996 to 2017, thus:

                    Figueroa *
                    Arvesen ****
                    Basso *****

                    Matthews ****
                    Demare ****
                    Lutsenko ***
                    Mohoric ***
                    Bystrom *
                    Ledanois -
                    Halvorsen -
                    Cosnefroy -

(Personally I'd have Ciolek as a three star rider, despite his MSR win - I wouldn't put him in the same bracket as Matthews and Demare.)

                      Dunbar launches a counter-attack, 30km to go.

Dunbar has a wheelsucker for company but is looking good.

This ES commentator today isn't varying his intonation at all, and he's very nasal sounding - it's like listening to a duck.

That sounds like the guy who has been doing the UCI feed for countries that don't have rights holders.

Dunbar isn't making any inroads here, the two leaders have extended their gap. But all to play for on the final climb now.

Ah, that makes sense. And by switching from the cycling feed on ES player to the main channel I now have Kirby and Smith.

It's saying something when I prefer Kirby.

Excellent cat-and-mouse stuff here now. Dunbar went pop, I'm afraid.

Kirby calling this far too early, suggesting that the lead three will win it.

Smith quickly mentions the large group not far behind.

Wow, this is a huge attack!

Marc Hirschi gains a big lead over the other two on the descent - can he hold it?

The two chasers are possibly going to end up thinking about silver and bronze rather than pulling back Hirschi - he's got a good chance here.

Great win for Hirschi - a Nibaliesque way to take victory. He's going full time pro with Sunweb next year.

The Elite Women are on the Igls climb that is the main challenge of the finishing circuit.

They will do it three times, but the first ascension is already causing a selection.

                                            65km to go.

So it turns out that AVV broke her tibia in a crash with 96km to go.

                                                  She finished seventh.
