When the draw first came out (but with Qualifiers yet to be allocated) I noted on the other thread that Federer had been drawn against a Q in R1, the winner to face a R2 match against the winner of a Q-Q R1 match, thus making Federer's first two matches (assuming R1 win) against Qs, possibly memorable days out for lower ranked players.
But in fact Federer's R1 opponent who's come through the qualies is Juergen Melzer, 35 years old, former world no.8, and with a respectable 1-3 career H2H against Federer. So he won't be starstruck. Might be good!
For those keeping tabs on such things, Australian Destanee Aiava became the first player born in this millennium to play a main draw match at a major. She lost.
The weather in Australia is insanely variable week to week, or even day to day, isn't it? According to the BBC, a max of 35C is forecast today (Tuesday) in Melbourne, but a max of only 19C tomorrow. After 35C, a max of 19C must feel horribly chilly.

We had 36 or 37 here on Sunday, and 23 today, and before leaving the flat in the afternoon I actually considered putting a pair of trousers on (I mean instead of a pair of shorts, you filthy individuals), for about five seconds.
Karlovic-Zeballos now at 18 games each in the final set. Really hope Zeballos wins. Tennis is the poorer if super-tall guys can just take matches with a procession of unreturnable monster serves*.
* plus the occasional bit of actual play to win a break or min-break of course.
Kyrgios had the chance to break Seppi in the fifth despite being barely able to move due to various (lack of condition related) ailments and serve for the match at 5-3. But Seppi recovered from 0-40 to hold and make it 4-4. Kyrgios was two sets to love up earlier.
