The suspended players are also having sponsorship contracts terminated.

I thought the line "mistakes have been made" was only ever used as a knowing joke these days. It seems not.

That's a huge sponsor that CA just lost. Big financial hole now?

Smith has done a tearful press conference that might garner some sympathy, or pity, but you look at the damage that Australia will suffer (big sponsor gone, team massively weakened and distracted, possibly the 2019 Ashes now swinging England's way) and it's going to be hard for him to walk back into the side immediately, especially if other batsmen come good in his place. I'm also not sure how bright he is; he's not a cerebral cricketer.

OTOH Australia have a habit of bouncing back and they have the key to doing that, namely a great attack. I just wonder how they will make enough runs for the attack to defend.

The Warner tweet is what you would expect: passive voice, no self-awareness, total egocentrism.

                Somerset statement on Bancroft

“Over the last few days, cricket has been over shadowed by a very dark cloud. There has been an understandable amount of emotion, deliberation, varying degrees of language and opinions across the game, the public and the various media platforms all associated with the alteration to the condition of the ball by Cameron Bancroft during the Third Test in Cape Town.

Cricket Australia, following their investigations, have offered sanctions to those involved.

We as a Club have been monitoring this process closely, alongside gathering as much additional information as we can. I have spoken numerous times to Cameron since last Saturday, he has spoken very maturely, he shared his deep regret and apologised to everyone associated to the Club.

It’s important we remember there is a young man at the centre of all this, he made a poor choice, as I and I’m sure many of us have done during our lives. What’s important now, is Cameron is given the appropriate support. There is no doubt in my mind, he will learn from this and he will return stronger.

I have met this morning with the CEO, Club Captain and Head Coach and with the Club’s best interests at the centre of our decision can confirm Cameron Bancroft will not be our overseas player for the 2018 season.

We are currently undertaking the process to recruit a replacement overseas player that best fits our needs and will share an update in due course.”

I wonder if the captain and coach were in agreement with the decision, but it lays down an obvious marker for other counties. I suppose they could play English league cricket.

313-6. South Africa probably have enough already.

Warner just sidestepped all questions about who was involved in the ball tampering plot. Perhaps he is saving the full story for a book down the way.

Steve Waugh gave his opinion from on high about it all a couple of days ago. And today on cricinfo Osman Samiuddin responds - the summary being 'check out the brass neck on this guy'.

Waugh continued to lie about the Lara catch when he published his tour diary. He's one of those narcissistic people who believe their own lies.

The Smith and Warner press conferences are obvious damage limitation through emotional manipulation. Crying to order.

Oh, I think CA gave them lots to cry about.

Anyway, Markram's century yesterday was very good, on a very difficult pitch.

Yes, I hadn't watched Warner's breakdown when I posted that; was going by his earlier "non-apology" Tweet. I did notice however that his script said "take full responsibility for my part in..." which is not quite the same as admitting to being the main instigator.

South Africa's openers have both made great centuries this series, which should be getting more attention (and normally would). Good sign for their future (although Elgar is already nearly 31).

South Africa 488: should be unbeatable from there.

Bavuma's probably got himself a stay of execution too.

I suppose the downside of this series for South Africa is that Australia's collapse has allowed South Africa to paper over some cracks, Bavuma being the obvious case. There's also a danger that they won't get the deserved credit for the series win, even though they were on top before the tampering.

Lyon's figures in this innings are a big comedown from where he was in the Ashes.

Lyon has been devastating all series against left handers and dreadful against right handers. In the Ashes he was devastating against left handers and OK against right handers. England have quite a few left handers.

If Smith doesn't play for Australia in a test again, the batsmen with the second and third highest averages in test history will have both been discarded not of their own volition by Australia in the space of three years.

SA effectively 401-3 after Day 3. Too one-side to hold much interest. How many sessions will Australia last in the fourth? I will say 2.5 sessions, maybe 65 overs

Meanwhile, Vic Marks is in the camp that says this week was a massive over-reaction:

I fear that Thimas Paine's Age Of Reason is going to come to a similar end to Kim Hughes.

The idea that Australia are going to be better, nicer people, not be sledging arseholes, shake hands at the beginning of matches is great.

But this Australia team has just lost three of their best players and is recovering from turmoil, much like Hughes's was.

And when this team keep losing by large margins, the Australian cricket public will suddenly lose the consciences, and blame Paine and his niceness rather than the fact that Australia have just lost their best batsman since Bradman, and will argue for a hard-nosed, grizzled, tough captain and ethos instead.

The middle order is a known problem. The guy who came in for Bavuma, Theunis de Bruyn, has a First Class average of 46, but was dreadful in the tests he has played. SA has no compelling all-rounder and insists on six specialist batters; it's no secret that the sixth batter is a problem position.

On the point of SA not getting the credit they deserve, there was an article on cricinfo yesterday which addresses that. It explains just how much SA has been on top. The point has also been made that the ball-tampering was, in part, a reaction to the pressure SA had applied on Australia, not only at Newlands but also in PE and even in the lost test in Durban.

All true, and Hughes was much more established than Paine, having been playing Tests since 1978, and one of their three best batsmen (Chappell, Border, Hughes were the three world-class batmen they had post-Packer up to the mid-80s). The one factor in Paine's favour is that he has good bowlers, but will they pull out all the stops for him or ignore him in the field, like Lillee ignored Hughes?
