    From the link:

"Based on the current rankings, eighth-placed West Indies would slip into division two"

A handy excuse for Australia and India to avoid a repeat of their recent problematic series, although to be fair WI got a 1-1 v England less than 12 months ago.

Martin Crowe has died of cancer, 53. RIP.

Probably New Zealand's finest ever batsman.

One of the greatest batsmen you could wish to see. Wonderfully fluent with the ability to out face any attack and take the momentum away from them. Shocked to hear of his passing at such an early age though not surprising in view of recent news. RIP indeed.

Very sad news indeed, one of the finest. A test batting average of 45 in that more bowler friendly era is probably equivalent to 55 today.

Remember seeing make a lovely accomplished hundred at Lord's in 1986. A very significant figure in NZ cricket. Seemed decent and intelligent too. Sad loss.

All the above about Martin Crowe, very sad news.

Not a good twelve months for iconic Kiwi sportsmen what with Jonah too.

PR disaster in the making: Ex-cricketers to play golf, miss funeral.

Presumably there will be a rapid change of plan, once they (their agents) get wind of public reaction ...

Maybe they'll say it's what Martin would have wanted?

Botham might have some history there because Crowe replaced Viv at Somerset. Maybe he'd feel like a hypocrite?

Crowe was a beautiful stylist, a great role model for any young batsman. He'd have scored tons of runs in today's game.

So, the 20/20 World Cup begins today - seems to much of a stretch for Ireland to shock Bangladesh in their preliminary group, but hope springs eternal. Hong Kong giving Zimbabwe a scare in the opener at present.

Oman beat Ireland by two wickets with a ball to spare. Two five-penalty beamers in the tense last over

There is a certain irony in Ireland, having successfully (and rightly) campaigned for their chance to be at the top table at events like these (it was going to be a closed top-8 shop) losing, in the very qualifier they'd demanded, to a debutant country like Oman.

Maybe they can take solace in Oman going on to beat England and Sri Lanka etc.

Straight knockout in Group B with the top 2 facing off today. Afghanistan have put up a great total of 186 and I suspect could be dumping Zimbabwe out.

And they have done so. Excellent performance.

Sadly, Oman could be dumped out by the weather on net run rate as their game v Bangladesh faces a washout.

On Cricinfo, both David Willey and Chris Jordan are listed as lfm and rfm respectively, while Liam Plunkett is down as rf. I get what the acronyms stand for, but what exactly is the line that denotes a fast from a fast-medium? And is there a mf as well, or just fm? And how quick is just a m?

Just seen the IPL teams. Whoever dreamed up Rising Pune Supergiants needs to have a word. Sunrisers Hyderabad was bad enough, but that is ridiculous. As these are the only 2 Indian cities that I have visited, and there is a good chance I'll be there again at some point, is someone doing it just to wind me up (looks nervously over shoulder, checks in the cupboard)

Two hours later and he's passed 150 and still tearing the Aussies a new one. Nobody else has reached 50 in the match as yet. Special is the right description.

Here are a few Kusal Mendis facts:

At one point he looked like he might break the oldest ever test record - highest percentage of runs scored by one batsmen in a single innings. But having scored over 72% it's dropped down to merely 60%. So Charles Bannerman 165 out of 245 looks like it might survive a bit longer.

Mendis's previous highest score of 53 came a couple of months back at Headingley, in that innings he was the Sri Lankan batsman who looked competent against the moving ball.

Neil Wagner's just taken three wickets in an over in Bulawayo.
