They've gone from AB to LL. Not a change of era, just of initials...

You can't replace Smith, Kallis and De Villiers. There is no replacement for Elgar, who is really a poor man's Gary Kirsten, Bavuma is a very average player but is the best quota batsman available, Amla has become a liability but SA keeps hoping that Old Amla will return; Faf is still great but he's getting old... so we have Markram, who is still inconsistent, and Quinton de Kock, who is a matchwinner on his day but awfully inconsistent as well. The fact that Theunis de Bruyn has been the first substitute batsman indicates just how thinly staffed SA are in that department.

There are a few youngsters who might break through.

Zubayr Hamza, who's 23, looks like a promising batsman (he has played only one test), who can also spin bowl the occasional over.

Janneman Malan is 22 and has a first-class average of 50.

Wiaan Mulder, who made his debut in the second test, is a decent middle-order batsman and a decent bowler. He's 21, so there might be promise there.

As a consequence, SA drop below NZ in the Test rankings. The Black Caps have never been this high before. They host a three Test series against Bangladesh starting Weds night our time.

Duanne Olivier retires from international cricket aged 26 to play as a Kolpak for Yorkshire. Fucks sake.

That's awfully sad and ominous. 48 Test wickets at 19.25, strike rate of 30.0. Test cricket can't afford to lose that class of player.

NZ fully deserve the second place. Most consistent side apart from India and would back them to beat the three sides below them in most conditions.

FFS, Olivier. He had a chance to become a straight pick once Steyn and Philander go. Chump.

Will he become eligible for England...?

Isn't any South African once they have eaten a greasy breakfast at the local caff?

Is it my imagination or are the majority of Kolpak cricketers South African? Or are there West Indian ones as well?

Sorry, talking to myself but does the Cotonou Agreement requiring a Valid Work Permit mean that Kolpak cricketers are much more likely to be Test players now? Are the Work Permit rules for cricket the same as football? Needing to have played for the national team etc.?

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is Kolpak?

The process by which athletes from non-EU countries that have association agreements with the EU can play in EU countries without being considered an overseas player. Kolpak was a Slovak handball player before Slovakia joined.

                          Useful piece from Cricinfo

Ah. Thanks for that. Like the Pacific Islanders playing rugby in Europe then? The ones who could be stitched up by Brexit .

Bangladesh off to a decent start with Iqbal still going in Hamilton. They've never won a Test against NZ (D3 L10) before.

Tamim makes a century, the rest do fuck all as Wagner destroys the middle order. I've only heard of one Bangladeshi bowler. What's shakib doing?

That's rubbish. Innings defeat looks on already.

Afghanistan are giving Ireland's top order a going over in the first ODI following a 3-0 T20I series whitewash, which included the new world record score of 278.

After the five ODIs there is to be a single Test.

Ireland 86/6 but Stirling is still there on 53.

Gulbadeen Naib is a real box of tricks, like an Afghan Chris Cairns.

Oh no, the innings ends in a very silly way. Stirling had made it through to the end and started the final over on 88*. The first ball from Dawlat was going wide but Stirling moved across so it wasn't given. Dawlat bowled the same for the second and Stirling didn't move, getting the wide called. Then on the third ball he shuffled well over to play a reverse but did it quite early and Dawlat just took out the unguarded middle stump.

Ireland all out for 161; a decent recovery but should be routine for Afghanistan.

Mujeeb's 10-3-3-14 the pick of a good team bowling effort.

OTF understands that we will be represented at the one-off Afghan- Ireland test (geopolitical tensions permitting), although sources are divided on which senior poster will actually show

Paul Stirling although only about 29 is the size of late period WG Grace. Bowlers do well to see the stumps when he's batting...

Excellent win for England women in India, and a five-wicket haul for Brunt. They needed that

I've always assumed that you can't play senior cricket for two teams that both have current Test status. He can in theory go back to South African Test cricket but they won't take him back (and why should they, given there's usually a conveyor belt of quicks in SA?).

Yes, the middle ranks in the Championship are very close together at the moment and every ODI win counts if we are to qualify directly for the next World Cup. The next two series (in Sri Lanka in March and hosting West Indies in June) are vital.

Those home matches against West Indies, in case anyone fancies them, are:
