Parthiv Patel, who played for India on their 2002 tour of England, has been promoted to open.

His 4th ball from Rabada was an absolute killer, fortunately flying over the slips.

          He's gone after making 16 off 15.

Fine catch from Markham diving in from the slips to get Patel’s bat/pad bloop.

I took my eye of Patel for a bit. Were all his 16 edges over slip?

I'll get the Cricinfo comments on them for you in a sec.

Rabada to Patel, FOUR runs, ooof, that leaps off the shoulder of the bat as Parthiv attempts to glide the short ball cramping him for room through point. It lobs over a leaping Hashim Amla at first slip and runs away to the boundary. Vicious ball. Nowhere to hide

Rabada to Patel, FOUR runs, leaps up as he gets beside the line of this length ball and tickles it fine. It was skidding low and shaped slightly into him, but on a leg stump line. India are into the lead

Rabada to Patel, 1 run, clips one off his hips, aerially towards fine leg. Rabada bowls it on a leg stump line again

Philander to Patel, 1 run, good length and pushed wide outside off, he reaches out and jabs it wide of mid-off who can't pick up as he slides to his right

Philander to Patel, 2 runs, thick outside edge sails wide of gully. He's fending from the crease as this nips away late from a good length on off stump. Stuck inside the line

Philander to Patel, FOUR runs, shot. Classic Parthiv Powerplay batting. Length ball hooping into his pads and he isn't close to the pitch of it, but he clips it from underneath to the deep backward square boundary

Philander to Patel, OUT, out caught at third slip! Looks like a lose lbw shout at first, but there's a big inside edge on this. He's looking for the flick again with his feet moving belatedly as he tries to drag this against the angle. From outside off. Big deflection onto his pad and it lobs up a few yards in front of Markram at third slip. Dies on him rapidly but he leaps and slides and holds on
                  PA Patel c Markram b Philander 16 (15b 3x4 0x6) SR: 106.66

                    Ha ha, thanks.

The TV just showed a couple of shots, captioned with "scratchy innings". Sounds about right.

Interesting (and brave) bit of captaincy to ask Patel to open. "It's a low scoring game; go out then and score some quick runs and see how it goes". Okay, its a dead rubber, but even so, would any of the current Test captains have done this? Smith possibly?

                      Comment

I'd have been tempted to open with Pujara, with a cunningly disguised Chris Tavare at 3. Then again, I'm that sort of guy.

Interesting bit of captaincy by Kohli, as you say.

Vijay out to the last ball before lunch having stuck around for 127 balls, which sounds - on this pitch - to be a huge feat, but will probably get forgotten as he only actually scored 25 runs.

India 100/4. probably need about 60 more to make this competitive.

                            Rabada with a c&b!

148/6. Can they scrape another 25-30? Match might be over today either way.

The pitch will probably be reported as substandard. Michael Holding wants the game called off as too dangerous but there were plenty of Tests played on these types of wickets in the past. First Test in the 2005 Ashes, for example.

On second thoughts, this looks worse than anything I can recall:

57.2 Rabada to Rahane, 1 run, spits up from a length and hits the handle as Rahane looks to withdraw the bat after getting behind the line. It lobs wide of square leg.
57.1 Rabada to Rahane, no run, good length and climbing up into the body. He looks to evade this and cops it on the glove
57.1 Rabada to Rahane, 5 wide, dips into the batsman and then past QDK's outstretched left arm. That bouncer climbs above the head after pitching on an off stump line and shoots off

I'm not sure what happens from here. The umpires are the sole adjudicators of dangerous conditions but commercial and other interests are likely to be in play, even if they shouldn't be. Certainly I think they'll be consulting the captains, players and management.

India have now gone past their first innings total, and (as I write) are level with SA's first innings score, with 6 wickets down. It's been a tremendous effort

That new ball is still very much new. Last wicket falls with the first ball delivered in the 81st over.

                                          247 all out, 240 ahead.

Poor Dean Elgar in the wars, and wary about the ball taking off. Faces one from Shami that doesn't take off, just swing hard into him and hit him just above the thigh pad.

Tmrw's final day is a Saturday. Great when this happens, but more often it'll be done and dusted. Odd bit of scheduling for somewhere that needs to boost its test crowds.

So, play suspended following that nasty one cracking into Elgar's grille.

What happens if they abandon? It's written off as a draw? Seems a bit unfair on India whose batsmen endured the likes of Morkel and Rabada on the very same pitch

Agree with that. It doesn't seem that the ball jumped up weirdly off a good length either, it was definitely a short ball and Elgar didn't react very well.
