India in bother at 28 for 3 at the close after skittling South Africa for 286 and reminding us that their seam attack is more than decent. Should be a good series this, between two sides who at full strength are superior to Australia and England. (SA weren't at full strength in England last summer)

Blimes. New Zealand have walloped 104 off the first 18 overs in the first Test v Pakistan. For one wicket.

First ODI E10, not a test. And the howling winds seem to be playing havoc with Pakistan's bowlers.

The wind in Wellington is as big a home advantage as any pitch. The bails have been removed already.

Meanwhile they're having a re-think about the spectator catch competition: who could possibly have known that offering large sums of money to drunk men if they trample over kids to get the ball might have caused problems?

Fair play to the likes of Jimmy Neesham for actually pointing this issue out to those who matter and for making their concerns well known.

Oops, yeah had it in mind that NZ was a Test for some reason. Ignore everything I ever say

It says more or less everything about Aus and NZ cricket that the holiday period is always for tests in one and ODI/T20s in the other. New Zealand will play about 700 short form games against all opposition before their next test in late March.

There was a period of Boxing Day tests in NZ, especially Wellington, but ... the public spoke (or the people paid to market to them).

Good documentary on Australian cricket in the 1970s:

South Africa are back to the quartet hunting in packs: Philander 3, Steyn 2, Morkel 2, Rabada 1. India can't compete with that assuming the ground staff keep preparing green tops (although it means they can't complain when India prepare spin tops next time in return).

Steyn has gone off with a bruised heel, unfortunately

                          That could even things up.

Reports that Steyn may be out of the entire series (he's definitely out of this match).

Huge blow to SA if that proves to be the case.

Would have been the best pace quartet fielded since 1984-86. They have to find a fourth bowler who can maintain pressure.

Rain might favour both teams because they know they won't have to bowl more than a day each in the 2nd innings so won't get overstretched.

Andile Phehlukwayo will probably take Steyn's place. He's young, lacks test experience and obviously not nearly as skilled as Steyn. But he is no mug either. But yeah, it's as shame that Steyn is injured again. At least it's not a recurring injury. It would be great to see that quartet take on Australia in March.

India 61-3 chasing 208, on a wicket and against an attack where any target above 100 is tough. Maybe all rests on Kohli at this point.

                                      Kohli gone lbw to Philander.

Sharma gone, another for Philander; 76/5 and only a matter of time surely.

Boom! Rabada gets Saha in the last ball before tea, LBW nipping back a long way. India appealed that it might be missing leg but it came back as umpire's call.

Kumar and Ashwin seem to be steadying the ship a little, so South Africa are turning to Maharaj.

Seems Ashwin didn't get the memo that this Test was over. Cracking finish here.

Two wickets in quick succession. Philander takes Ashwin and Shami to bring up a five-for.
