Cairns has been cleared. Working in the courts was a corrective about giving too much weight to what was reported about cases, but I'm still astonished, given the reported testimony.
Yeah, it does seem gobsmacking. The only thought is the jury were so disatisfied with Vincent et al as witnesses that they couldn't be sure of anything that was said.
Where does that leave NZ's current captain, whose testimony the jury seems to have decided was bollocks? Either Cairns was lying or McCullum was lying, and the jury seems to have gone for the latter. But why would McCullum lie?
It's not either/or for a jury. The defence did what you'd expect - found the weakest link (Vincent) and did enough to discredit him and his evidence. The waters were muddy enough for doubt.
Strangely, it's as if NZ cricket is inhabiting two different worlds simultaneously. "Yeah, let's get outraged ... at Nigel Llong". I get the impression there's no public appetite for diminishing a summer of taking on the Aussies, even with McCullum at the centre of events in the "other" world.
