    Map of Olympic Medals

Apologies if this has been posted before but it kept me entertained for a minute or two.

    That's fun.

We need some alternative medal contests, as the official one is like a Chelsea-Man Utd final, booing China or hissing the USA. China vs the EU is a pretty close contest, as is Russia versus ex-USSR.

East Germany won lots of medals.

      Were they all on drugs?

The important bit is that women from Maghera have rosy cheeks?

Smashing. If NI doubles its medals tally, they'll pull level with The People's Caledonian Republic of Chris Hoy.

Aye, I'm not saying they're rough but you can strike a match etc. etc.

Flipping trough that map for previous olympics, I found to my surprise that East and West Germany competed as a united team at the Olympics until 1964.

Selecting a team must have been very complicated.

This is the united German football squad.

                    Skillz.

Is the US the only country in which "overall medals tally" seems to be the standard way of listing the medals table (I notice it's this way on Yahoo too)? It seems everywhere else lists them in order of number of golds won (ties broken by silvers and then bronzes). And has it always been this way or is it just this year, with the USA well behind China on the "normal" tables and actually just ahead on the US version?

Not meant as a dig, I'm genuinely intrigued.

Reading up a bit on past Olympics, I actually had no idea that they had 'Art competitions' at the Games from 1912-1948.

A gold medal for 'town planning', or for designing the stadium used for that year's Olympics. Brilliant.
