    Pointless arithmetic in diving

In the diving, each dive is judged on a scale out of ten, with the 5 median marks of 7 judges taken into account. The total of those 5 marks is then multiplied by the "difficulty factor" for the dive, which can be anything from 1.0 to 3.6.

Then they take that number, and multiply it again by 0.6. Why? What difference does that make? Why 0.6? Why not 0.5, or 2.4, or 23.567?
