England's Indian (and Sri Lankan) Summer

India were the World Champions coming into this series.

They are still the World Champions, going out of the series.

They are very good at one day cricket, and especially in Asian conditions. But they are dogshit at test cricket away from home, and have been for most of their history.

This is true, yet they've had recent spells of being pretty good. They only lost one Test in England between 1996 and 2011. I think they've been particularly awful this time. Has any touring side ever had a worse-performing top order?

Australia in 1981 were pretty rank. Other than Welham (who only played one test) and Border (of course) no-one averaged above 30.

Rather like this England team portrait by Joe Root

India have had many batting shockers down the years, as this list shows:

              http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;orderby=team_average;orderbyad= reverse;team=6;template=results;type=team;view=ser ies

This year is not as bad as some others because they started out OK (well England bowled poorly in the first two games). In the last two Tests, however, I think they were as bad as any Indian team has been since maybe the 1960s.

These are the worst batting performances by all teams touring England since 1970. In 5-Test series, only West Indies in 2000 were worse:
