I have done several of these revisionist histories of NFL teams, whereby I take a team in Madden 2004 (the all-time classic version) and see what would have happened if history had turned out differently.
And when I was doing the other teams, I kept thinking about how cool it would be to do the NY Jets.
Perhaps it is because they are such a uniquely tortured team in NFL history. The single moment of glory, the Namath-inspired championship, and then the long years of futility and darkness, the mockery, the buffoonery, the horror.
The Jets in 2003 were not without promise with the future Hall of Famer Curtis Martin at HB, the talented although noodle-armed Chad Pennington at QB and the speedy Santana Moss at WR. But the real weakness was a very veteran, very slow D where almost a complete overhaul was required.
We will join the Jets in 2003 and continue the journey through to the present day and beyond. We will use Madden 2004, the finest ever Madden, but we will not play the games. We will draft players (real ones) and sign free agents and act as the GM of the Jets, but when it comes to the games themselves, we will sim the regular season and then "watch" any playoff games (you set it to play CPU vs CPU and sit back and watch the game unfold; it is curiously compelling, especially with such a magnificent version of Madden).
I plan to create an NFL Camelot through assembling the most brilliant athletes of their day in Dallas, the fastest, strongest, most agile competitors, and so assemble a true NFL dynasty that will stand the test of time.
I will update you on all my moves as GM and tell you how the team does every season and together, we will write a new history of the NY Jets.
