Reasonably quick 11-6 11-8 11-5 win for David. It never really looked like King believed she could win.

All the other higher seeds won.

Finals are therefore both #1 vs #2, Matthew vs Willstrop in the Men's and David vs Massaro in the Women's.
Matthew and Willstrop really don't get on with each other at all, so that one won't be a love-in despite both being from Yorkshire. Or maybe because both are from Yorkshire...

          Bronze medal Squash matches;
          Barker [3] beats Ghosal [4] 3-1
          King [3] beats Waters [4] 3-0

I hope Willstrop and Massaro are feeling lucky.

            Nope.

Nicol David was far too good for Laura Massaro by reports. 3-0. Nick Matthew was just, just that little bit more consistent than James Willstrop. 3-2.

A good event. Now to get the Egyptians et al also involved in a competition of this stature...

HOWEVER. There is a sprinting race, for blind people? And the big black fuckers attached, are ignored? Sorry Denise Lewis, piss off, that was a big black guy running like fuck, with a tiny white woman attached.

Evening Gero-ld. The blokes helping the blind and partly sighted girls seemed to be enjoying themselves on a lap of honor.

You'll be glad that Ultonia are doing as badly as ever. Three fat lads got silver on the bowling green and our paperweight Fenians should be beating up some people later.

Could Germany or least Lower Saxony join this? The House of Hanover and Heligoland should be strong enough links ...

Does Heligoland have a football team? It would be a great place for a tour.

                          Enrollment seems to be open.

Hat tip to the, I think Canadian, woman doing co-commentary on the men's weightlifting on Tuesday evening. Jeannie something. Very insightful, informed, enthusiastic without being irritating. I've never been especially interested in weightlifting before now but she helped make the event very engaging.

( Edit: it's Jeane Lassen, whose Twitter bio reads, "Olympian in the sport of lifting heavy things. Never get tired of snatch and jerk jokes." )

Wild finish to the Women's Hockey Semi just now. England were beating New Zealand 1-0 with around 8 minutes left when a NZer picked up a yellow card (5 minute sin-bin) for failing to retreat 5 metres from a free-hit. NZ subbed some players at this point, and somehow ended up with 11 players still on the pitch. After about 1 minute more play, the Umpires realised this and gave the NZ Captain another yellow card. So need a goal, 9 vs 11. With 3.5 minutes to play, England's striker commits a foul and gets a yellow herself. 9 vs 10. NZ ride out the suspensions and equalise within seconds of being 11 vs 10. Straight from England's push-back, they lose the ball, NZ attack and hit the post. In the scramble following this, NZ win a short. England defend it, clear, go up the other end and win a short of their own with just 8 seconds to play. Time expires before the short can start, so England get to have their entire team up (Hockey says the set-piece must be played). The shot is (intentionally) deflected by an English player, goes over the 'keeper, and then is volleyed clear off the line. Full-time, 1-1.

                              Phew.

Penalty shots is going to seem completely calm after all of that!...

England won them 3-1. All quite prosaic.

20 countries have won a gold medal so far, including Uganda, Grenada and Kiribati.

Tomorrow's the boxing finals, so we might see one or two for Northern Ireland.

I can't believe I wasted an hour watching the Men's 10m Platform diving this morning with my excited daughters, presuming it was the final, only to find out that these were 'the preliminaries'(whatever the fuck that means) and that all 11 divers will be in the final tonight. What was the bloody point of all that then?

Two golds, up to 15th in the Table. Ginger Spide Barnes stayed classy to the end, telling his beaten opponent at the prizegiving that he didn't like Danny Boy

Apparently the BBC NI sports hacks, plus the rest of the team, have now admitted they can't understand a word he says.

Val of the thread title isn't from West Belair- he plays squash for Malaysia, Mum likes 80s poodle rock.

It's been bloody amazing, astounding to be here. It would have been so anyway but finally seeing Welsh Gold this afternoon after 23 events in 11 days finished it off perfectly.

Yeah, echoing Harry's comment - me and Mrs TrL had 4 days up there and had an absolutely brilliant time. As uncomfortable as I am with the concept of a 'Commonwealth' Games, there's no denying it's a fantastic thing to be a part of, even just as a paying spectator.

Heh, bronze and gold - that was even better than I expected!

                                                Somewhat puzzled by this
"Team Wales boss Davies said: “We are delighted to announce Geraint as our Team Wales flag bearer for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“Geraint is an influential figure in the sporting world and his many achievements, including his Olympic gold and Tour de France victory, make him the perfect choice to lead Team Wales out for the last time in Glasgow."
Err, Thomas has never won a stage in Le Tour, and certainly not the Tour itself, so not sure what that's about (is it an overblown reference to the fact that he rode in a team whose leader won the Tour?).

Anyway, he's having a good year, with the Bayern Rundfahrt win being the other main highlight, plus days in yellow at Paris-Nice, and a few strong showings in the classics too. Be interesting to see how the World Championships course suits him (and if Team GB dare to make him the leader over Froome, which he probably should be, given that he's the most senior rider whose season hasn't been shattered by injuries and other issues).
