Ian Bell (Cricket) - player of the series as part of winning Ashes team
Christine Ohurougu (Athletics) - World Champion, 400m
Nick Dempsey (Sailing) - World Champion, windsurfing
Jason Kenny (Track Cycling) - World Champion, Keirin
Simon Yates (Track Cycling) - World Champion, points race
Dani King (Track Cycling) - part of World Champion pursuit team
Elinor Barker (Track Cycling) - part of World Champion pursuit team
Nick Matthew (Squash) - World Open Champion
Laura Massaro (Squash) - British Open* Champion
Non Stanford (Triathalon) - World Champion

    * - British Open included as a 2013 Women’s World Open hasn’t happened as yet, and given that its now November its becoming increasingly likely it won’t happen at all. The British Open is the next biggest crown Squash offers.
Massaro won the "2013" World Open at the weekend - seemingly no venue was available until now to host the event.
Apparently it is hoped that the 2014 event will actually be held this year, so Massaros reign could be quite short.

The big story wasn't Massaro, but her opponent in the Final.
The venue that eventually stepped up was Penang, the home town of the dominant player on the WSA tour, Nicol David. She is apparently as famous in Malaysia as any athlete, face on a good proportion of billboards, that kind of thing. Come the SF, she was up against the World Junior Champion Nour El Sherbini, an 18 year-old Egpytian girl who had played 7, lost 7 to David, all without taking a game. So it was rather a shock when El Sherbini won. She also beat two other top-5 seeds en route, and took Massaro to five games in the Final.
Given that El Sherbini first won the World Junior Champs five years ago (aged 13!), I think we have a real prodigy on our hands here. Hopefully she and David can produce a Nadal-Federer type affair over the next few seasons, with Massaro cast in the Djokovic/Murray role. But its possible that El Sherbini is just going to blow everyone else out of the water.

Disinterring this to record the fact that Britain now has both male and female Downhill Mountain Bike World Champions. In fact, Wales has the latter.

I am still trying to find out what other sports Wales has World Champions in.

Maybe Rogin could change the title and we could have a rolling "World Championships" thread?
