    Racism and Cricket

This probably belongs with the Azeem Rafiq discussion, but as that was in the middle of the 2021 County thread, I'll create a new one. Sadly, there's likely going to be plenty of material for it.

Anyway, the Heil has published a story that a high profile England player has been accused of regularly using the P--- slur 6-8 years ago.

I’m sure that the high profile public deep dive into racism at Yorkshire will have administrators at a few other counties awaiting the worst. Due to Yorkshires’s long standing reputation for boardroom arrogance a lot of people were gleefully rubbing their hands at the fully deserved trashing of their reputation but it was always highly doubtful that this was a single county issue. This will run and run, unfortunately.

The report says that the offender was reprimanded by a senior player, which then must mean that the senior player chose not to report it, which was the wrong call and makes it an institutional matter at the club, implying that it was relying on senior players to deal with the the problem.

Do we know which players? Was this at international or county level?

        Thanks for sharing this Etienne

I've not seen anyone named yet, but "high profile" and "England" rather than "English" suggests the player is an international. The incident(s) were while playing county cricket though.

I can't entirely follow this Satchmo. Sounds like you think it was both the senior player's problem for not reporting it and the club's problem for waiting for them to report it.

I think that is right. The senior player is at fault for not reporting it. The club is at fault for not having the right structure in place that the incident might not be reported just because a senior player decided not to.

Same incident, but from the victim's perspective.

Dobell's dropped a few clues in there, but even those criteria could fit a few counties (and accurately describe the experience of several Asian players). If the Rashid case weren't already known, I'd have said Yorkshire, using those clues. The clear implication is that this was happening everywhere except if a county had a stringent anti-racism culture.

Worth clicking into the replies for Dobell's response to some twat called Cambridge True Blue. I laughed aloud.

Not a surprise especially on an individual basis.

Us brown people have all suffered worse quite probably, it's the institutional stuff which hurts more.

But no clear causal picture there sadly.

This is (I think) a very interesting article on how Haringey Cricket College was allowed to fold by the ECB and why Black cricketers stopped coming through. Barney Ronay has also written some good stuff about the decline of cricket in Lewisham. I can't remember if he explicitly ties it to race, but he certainly hints at it and Lewisham has the highest BAME population of any borough in the country.
