They don't do a huge amount here I don't think (WOM would have a better idea). CIBC and Scotiabank of the big five seem the most sport oriented.

I actually think that the near simultaneous rise of mobile "trading" and "gaming" apps presents an interesting sociological experiment as to their relative popularity among various populations.

If only the collateral damage to society wasn't as severe.

The uptake of trading (5 day, 6.5 hours constant market w/ leverage) makes sports gambling seem almost innocent.

You are certainly correct that the gaming enablement with making these things so accessible is a decision that, like juul, is going to keep some of your peers in very well compensated and active business for the coming decade or two.

Yeah, it’s certainly destructive, but I’m not sure how much worse it can get. There are about 500 casinos in the US. Most states (all?) have a lottery. Illegal gambling is everywhere.

It’s hard to know to what extent gambling is growing because how do they know how much of the revenue represents new gamblers versus taking market share from illegal operations?

And, as alluded to, capitalism offers lots of forms of speculative investments that create the same hazards for addicts.

At least casinos will stop extending credit at some point. I’m not sure about the credit card companies. It seems that somebody is always willing to offer credit.

Canada is working on making sports gambling legit, so I suspect those ads will show up there too.

It’s all very ugly. I’m unhappy that the neighboring township is probably going to allow a casino to be built in the dying mall there. Such a lack of imagination.

On the other hand, as a non-gambler, I like that, for example, the ticker at the bottom of the screen during FS1’s football coverage showed the odds along with the list of upcoming games. It’s a very succinct way to preview the game, really.

For example, IIRC, Oregon was a two touchdown underdog. That puts that result in context better than the rankings could.

I trust bookies to be dispassionate and unbiased far more than coaches or sportswriters.

Sports gambling is a tricky one for me to get my head around in the US, as it was legal my whole life in the UK. The fixed odds machines that arrived more recently seem like a different awful cancer there.

The problem with robinhood and the culture surrounding is that it gets quickly into options, which much like spread betting are a very efficient form of magnification. Everything becomes x10, x100 or more but only needs the same amount of dollars in your account.

Geez - I understand all the math around how to effectively do options and steer my ass clear. It is awful that so many people get sucked in who have no idea what they are messing with.

                I don’t know about options.

But I saw Casino and Oceans 11.

A metaphor for the whole franchise…
If the loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and Ryan Fitzpatrick's injury weren't enough disappointment for one day, some Washington Football Team fans got drenched when a pipe burst at the stadium.

You'd think that after all this time someone somewhere in US sports broadcasting would have twigged that Sean Payton and Mike Tomlin are really, really good at what they do.

But nope, cue more "oh my god, the Saints and Steelers have knocked off two powerhouse teams - where did that come from?" nonsense.

The Jets lost, the offensive line allowed six sacks, free agent signing Lamarcus Joiner (on a one year contract) is out for the season, punter Braden Mann, who was solid last season, is out for 4-6 weeks, as is Mekhi Becton who had his kneecap dislocated, we couldn't get any sort of running game going and the play calling was vanilla and predictable. Normal Jets stuff.

But Zach Wilson looked really promising at times, so I'm actually quite happy!

Carl Nassib - the first openly gay player to actually appear in an NFL game as far as I know - had the key sack to cause the fumble that lead to the Raiders victory.

Lots of drops, too. If Moore had held on (pass interference?) the game might have been different. But yes, that's the Jets.

Wilson is a real prospect, but in the time of social media he's going to have to become Joe Montana in the next few games, or he's Johnny Manziel.

On Sunday's evidence, they may be better than the Giants, which could buy him some time.

The Giants are a tyre fire.

The Jets are at least starting from a position of "We were totally shit last season, so any signs of improvement are positive."

In a sign of just how bad the Giants are,

Washington Football Team 30 New York Football Giants 29

Both teams tried very hard to give the game away multiple times, but the G-Men ended up on top in that battle, as an offsides penalty on a field goal attempt that WFT missed as the clock ran out gave them another chance from five yards closer in, which they seized.

I was watching highlights this morning, but it seemed to just show pretty much every down in the first quarter and naught else.

I shall have to seek out the excitement elsewhere.

                                        The key moments are
Daniel Jones missing a receiver in the end zone with no defender Iin his area code

The WTF quarterback throwing a godawful interception when a single first down would have iced the game

Washington"s kicker missing a game winning field goal

A NYG lineman mindlessly jumping offside on that play

The kicker accepting the second chance this afforded and still coming quite close to missing.

Playing without most of their assistant coaches due to COVID protocols, the Saints are down 17-0 to Carolina

Poor Zach Wilson appears to be quarterbacking for the Patriots, the number of times he's thrown to them.
